What do I drive on the Nurburgring?

Ok, myself and a friend are really keen to visit the ring this summer, the only problem is that I am 21 and my friend is 20.
We don't exaclty have race/track cars so what other options are there?

as far as I know you need to be 25 or over for rent a racecar
Chaps, you do not need anything special to drive the Ring. Just be sensible and use your own car. Just don't get bananas in the first few laps (--> read the first 50 laps

)

I have been offered four Yoko's 205 610/17s and wondered if these would fit OK?

I thought the ring will ruin tyres, and brakes quickley, I just dont want to risk my car gettin fked up and being stuck.

This will depend on how you drive I have done hundreds of laps of the Ring and sure I have worn tyres and brakes out but only after a long time. My last set of R888's did about three trips to the Ring that's about 150 laps plus a couple of track days in the UK

610 is the outside diameter and will be fine. 620 is the limit I would go (= as bit as 235/40/17)

Yes over 25 for renting the last time I was there too.
And as for bringing out rental cars there if you fly over, be aware that there's scouts from many of the rental car companies there looking for rental cars being brought around the Ring.

If you are driving your own car over you trust it to get you there. You should therefore trust it to see you ok on track. Believe me you will not be going that fast on your first visit. If you are you will be having an accident and walking home.
Prepare your car well with a good service. Ensure you check brake pads AND take a spare set with you. Enjoy your laps (after reading the rule board) most people only do around 10 on their first weekend. Take it steady and drive your pride and joy back home again.
If you need more info join the forum linked to the Northloop.co.uk web site and we will do our best to help you.

Now here is a question for you even if you are driving your own can at the ring or on any track as a matter do you need special insurance
are there comapnys who cover track day insurance do you need it for normall tracks ???

You will need to check the small print on your own policy. If it doesnt exclude the ring / derestricted german toll roads or anything else specific like that then you SHOULD be insured.

Just take whatever you drive normally. Get on with it!

It's very easy to say to people to take care in the ring ,but when you get a bit confident with it you seem to drive on that bit more.
I had a rental Bmw, with an excess of 5k on the insurance, and once I got used to the handling I was throwing it with reckless abandon into the bends. If I crashed it would have meant thousands, luckily I was ok.

Rkive - take whatever you've got and have fun. I've had some marvellous passenger laps in unremarkable machinery.
Take northloop's advice and make sure the car is 100% before you set off - if anything is on the way out, the 'Ring will kill it.

can only second that. Change brake fluid and pads. Bed them propely in.
Have a GOOD look at your water hoses and anything that carries slippery fluids. Many accidents (of others, not yours) happen because of fluid spillages, especially bikers are suffering.
But as already posted many times, TAKE IT EASY! If you drive in the limits of your car (---> if your brakes feel they suddenly don't works as good, don't ignore it, SLOW down) and the limits of your self, you will have a great time.
The Ring is not the place to play hero, try that in Bedford where you have plenty of room.
....and join northloop.co.uk and read, read, read
see you over there!

No you dont need insurance on UK track days.
Yes there are specialist companies out there who will insure cars with cages. Look in the back of EVO mag for starters.

The ring is no harder on a car than a decent A road plus motorway intersections.

I'd be more concerned about that bird driving the Transit diesel overtaking me!

Yeah i did the ring trip when i was 19 and it was fu*cking awsome you will love it, but make sure you listen to these guys and take it easy. I was unlucky and had a fast spin by Kallenhard but lucky for me thers a bit of run off onto the grass, and car was ok.

I am sorry buy I can't disagree more. I have been on a few trackdays in the UK and never had any trouble but haven broken down ON the Ring
(have 180Euro CASH handy, the bloke in the towtruck doesn't take cards)
and had a few last minute repairs whilst over there just to get through the rest of the weekend.
Anything which isn't at least in 90% condition will give you grieve.
Karussel will shake any loose connector off, my cranksensor wasn't happy after five laps through it.
Just the weight transfer in some of the bends will rip anything slightly loose of the brackets.
