E30 Zone

I have an R reg e36 compact with the original 318i rear brake set up. (5 stud on the E30 subframe and trailing arms.) The car is has an S50B30 engine fitted and some Brembo 4 pots from an 8 series up front. It is only used as a track day car so a rear brake upgrade is long overdue.

Suggestions please.

Keri at WMS does his 2 pot rear caliper and larger rear disc conversion kit.

I've pm and emailed him but no reply. I'd like to see what alternatives there are. I can't afford an ap setup but heard there's a Porsche caliper which can be used.

I'm fairly certain DanThe sells some adapters so you can run 540i rear calipers.

The problem with that is getting a pair of e34 540i rear calipers, otherwise a good upgrade.

Yes I think Dan does the adaptors too.

A caliper can also be used from an e32 750 and an e34 m5 3.6, there could be more but it's been a while...

They are getting a bit thin on the ground, but first thing to consider is the hydraulic balance between the front/rear and master cylinder, obviously the standard rears have a much smaller piston compared to a 540i for example

What MC would you suggest. The car has the e36 m3 set up apart from the rear brake calipers which are the standard 318ti ones still. And I assume the balance would require rerouting the brake lines internally??

M3 master cylinder and rear calipers will prob be as close as you can get to perfect with standard parts, would be worth checking the difference in the front calipers piston surface areas between the brembo's and the M3 to see how far out they are, would give you an idea on if you need a rear bias valve or not too

Really sorry for not getting back to you - I've been snowed under and had a pretty nasty new year too. I owe a fair few people replies and am working through them, and in fact several are about E30 rear kits which is good as we normally do them in batches (being low volume in comparison to the front ones).

Just to confirm...I've got an E36 (325i) rear hub to play with (as well as E30 4-stud of course), but that isn't the same as you're talking about here with the compact?

ive just been searching through the threads, would a 535i caliper do? same as 540i i assume.. got a brand new one sitting here, unwanted part so rather than sending it back

My second son was born on Monday morning so , haven't had a chance to do much.

The rear set up is a e36 318ti compact, standard, which as far as I knew is the same as the e30 and the z3? What difference would 4 or 5 stud make?

To bmw9818, I don't know if it would work or not. I'll have a look about and see if it's suitable. If you could pm me a price delivery included to Edinburgh that would be much appreciated.

Ah I see. Knew it would be too good to be true. I kinda wanted a bolt on system which would not require to much by way of brackets. Do you think there is any of your systems which could work?

I've got the brackets and discs, but the calipers won't be here by then as I haven't even worked out how many I need if I'm doing a batch and it takes at least a month - sorry...! No point trying to do it if its likely to end up missing the date.

Is that a dealbreaker for you?

PS - that's E30 brackets I mean!

Right Keri, I've found out the e30 and e36 compact are the same - apart from the number of wheel studs.

It wouldn't be a deal breaker but I've two track days in march so sooner is obviously better for me.

I've just looked on real oem and looks like different set up entirely. looks like the E46 compact has e36 rear axle.

Never mind, I've got my eye on an E36 source so it would have been ok anway!

Having had a look on real oem looks like the disc on the standard e36 318ti compact is 272x10.
The e30 318is is 268x10.
The e30 325i is 258x10
The e30 touring is 258x10
The e30 m3 is 282x12

So what that tells us is the 318is is a baby m3 afterall.

I'm sure you know all that anyway.

The iS has the same size rear discs as any other E30 (non M3). That's a mistake on Realoem, probably a typo by an iS owner

How much is this kit? What diameter are the discs? 4x100 PCD?

1 - £TBC, not 100% sure at this stage as it's a long time since the last batch we did.
2 - 290mm
3 - Yup, 4x100 and E30 bore (or any other bore you like)

I'll drop you guys some more info soon.

I'm sure that'll fit the e36 compact. Only difference is the number of wheel studs.
