Evening,

Just looking at swapping out my brakes ready for MOT time, car is mainly going to be used for enjoyable days out in the countryside and some track use.

As much as I would love a BBK, I am thinking of going for pagid discs (from ECP) and then yellow stuff pads all round.

Thoughts?

Original BMW disc taking some beating. Only ones that guarantee not to warp!
Use this with ferrdo pads and high boil fluid it's good enough for most applications.

Cool, I assume pagid are OEM quality but will give the dealers a shout in the morning to see the prices.
Was going to use some 5.1 and already have some braided lines to fit

BMW Disks and Pagid pads with BMW brake fluid and thats more than good enough for an occasional road car.

I use Black Diamond front discs and OEM rears with DS2500 pads, braided lines and either ATE Super Blue or AP550 fluid (rotated every yearly change). Master cylinder is a 23mm 7-series one and brakes are outstanding on the track and as good as standard on the road.

As above, i think the standard setup in good working order works well for everyday driving, fast road and the occasional trackday.

only if you've got a lot more power than standard or want to regularly do trackdays then there's no point spending loads of money.

I used standard disks and ferrodo ds2500 pads on mine and they worked very well for the sort of use you have described.

For a road car, DS2500 are no good, they rust badly when not in use and will deposit on the disks.

They also have very high wear rates, for an occasional road car I would only fit Pagid.

Brakes are due a change anyway which is why I'm looking at my options. Think I will go for a fairly standard setup with a good fluid and braided hoses for now.

Never had an issue with ferodos wearing early, they were on mine for 20,000 mainly b-road miles and three trackdays.

Was probably used too often to suffer any rusting or deposit issues too.

EBC red pads are worth a shout

They held up well on track and worked fine on the road from cold

Also brembo discs are worth considering, but not the drilled ones.

if you use an M3 with standard disks (whatever make) on track, add COOLING. And not just the holes in the bumper and wheel arch. Ideally you go to the centre of the disk.

Especially when you use uprated pads with a higher operating temperature!

And buy Castrol SRF brake fluid. Yes, it's expensive but it's worth the money IMHO.

Or fit larger disks (300x28mm from Merc) and 7 series calipers. fraction of the cost of a BBK but a fair improvement over stock. Won't warp for starters and fits over the 16inch OEM rims
