Last night I reaslised that I can hillclimb and sprint the 320 on the cheapskate license within the road going classes.
Does anyone else do this sort of thing?

I have done a bit before I got into BMWs, just the local North West championship though ANWCC.
Its a great way to get out and compete though, especially on a budget! Cheap license and you can get to compete at some decent venues

Dont think you will be competitive with your car (think CTR's and Renaultsport Clios) but its a great atmosphere to compete in
Also speak to 'Black Potato' on the SELOC forum as I think he is the moderator on there

I have done the Cruborough Championship for the last few years, up against E30 and E36 M3's in the standard production class and have given them a run for their money with 325i SE.
The standard production class up to 2000cc tends to be ruled by the s2000's , Clios and MGTF's , if you go in to a modified class it becomes a money pit.
But remember when you are sprinting you are racing yourself against the clock and makes you better driver, and its a great days motorsport with a great atomsphere,
See the basic introduction to sprinting on the link below

I've competed in the Trident Welsh Sprint and Hillclimb Championship since 2005. I was road modified class champion in 2005 in a pretty close to standard 205 GTi. I went on the develop the car into a 200 bhp Mi16 engined Mod Prod car and won the Modified Production class in 2008. I then sold the car to help pay for my wedding

! I'm now building a SR20DET engined E30 for the same championship.
True, you can compete in the standard road class for relatively little money. You'll need a National Non-Race B licence from the MSA (about £30 and no ARDS test needed), join a local motor club and a championship to receive regs for upcoming events.
Clio sports, S2000s, Integra Type Rs, Civic Type Rs, etc tend to dominate the up to 2 litre class, but you can have a great laugh on track and enjoy a friendly paddock atmosphere.
Go for it and good luck! Details on the Welsh Sprint and Hillclimb championship (events in Wales, Midlands and South West) here:

AJ what cars were you up against then? I still maintain that a 205 mi16 is fairly easy for anyone to jump in and get it moving sharply. I think your next project will be a whole host of fun and probably fundamentally faster, but probably harder to get the most out of!
Keep your thread updated chap.

Jon,
I agree, the Pug was easy for anyone to drive very fast straight off the bat - Mi16, "short" 4:4 final drive, KAAS LSD, Gazz shocks and sticky Dunlop X22s made it a barrel of laughs! I was mainly up against other 205s, Mk2 Astras with tuned Red Tops fitted, Renualt 5 GT turbos (1.4 with a turbo meant they scraped into the 2 litre class), Clio 172s/182s were starting to come through more and more too
I chose to go with RWD for my new project after borrowing my father in law's Cosworth powered Mk1 Escort for an event at Three Sisters. I spent the whole 3 hour drive home discussing with my mate, how I could go with big power RWD on a "limited " budget.
My old hillclimb Pug:

My father in law's Cozzy powered Escort I borrowed that convinced me to go RWD (with my old car behind it at the Wiscombe hillclimb, Devon)...
What my father in law eventually did to the Escort at Llys Y Fran hillclimb, Wales (he was Ok)..
My new project...
The Sr20 is going in this week ( I finally have all the mounts/parts sorted). It looks a long way off, but I have nearly everything I need now to finish it - minus wheels/tyres.Updates soon.

I just cried a small amount at the mk1. Still, it could have been worse, you could have done it!Unsaveable I presume?
Sorry for the off topic / slight tangent OP.

Yes, scrap - every panel bent. He's now building a Cosworth powered Gilbern Invader Mk3.
Sorry for off topic too.

I did sprinting as a cheap way to get into Motorsport. Its fun, relaxed and nice to actually try and compete, but im going to stick to trackdays as you get more time on good tarmac for your money.

Well, as is always the case, I have changed my mind and I'm going in search of building something nice instead - I figured after 7 years in engineering it's about time I used my mad skillz for something of my own!

Enjoyed this thread and have decided to have a go myself.
I just need to find a car. Ideally I want to use an e21 (I have a thing for them

) but if not it'll be a cheap e30. I'm only doing it for fun so being competitive isn't an issue. It'll be just be and the stop watch!
