E30 Zone

wasnt sure if i should post this in this section or not but A here goes, i have fitted a OMP dished steering wheel and would like to fit the steering wheel Quick release that i have but due to the low position of the fixed bucket seat places the wheel way too high and too close... so my question is is there boss on the market that is not so deep so i could fit the quick realease and wheel to it without it being so in my face, i know some of you guys have dropped the colume but i dont want to go down this route as currently the wheel is at a perfect distance and hight...

Erm.....if its at the perfect distance and height, then why do you want a shorter boss thats going to change the distance and height?

Because he wants to fit a quick realease too, which adds 2-3cm to the overall boss length.

Sounds like a flat wheel might be the only option.

mmmm Thats a shame as i realy like the dished wheel and i have only just purchased it, guess i cant have it all

I personally have a real dislike for quick release bosses - Every car I have ever driven with one fitted had a tiny bit of play in it, except for the weld on examples used in radicals and single seaters.

There are some really crap ones around. Mine doesn't have any play in it but it's one of the better bolt on ones.

I changed from the Lifeline/Sparco/Momo style to the Krontec QR-01 and it is a massive difference. Both mating surfaces are steel, as are the two locking bars. Nothing to wear out unlike the aluminium receivers on the afore mentioned units. 55mm depth just like the Sparco/Momo units, and bolt to any 6x70 PCD wheel & hub. Can also get them as weld on splines for those with custom steering shafts.

If you are worried about the column being too high, why not drill out the column bolts and lower the column with spacers like I did?

The Krontec QR is a fantastic looking unit, and really well made. If my budget stretched far enough, I would have also got one of these.

I have a lifeline and never experienced any play.

dose this fit direct without the use of a boss ?

That's great. Well done. I have used one, and have fellow E30 Racers who have used the Sparco units who experience play between the steel shaft and the aluminium receiver.

With the Krontec that wear possibility is removed. For the little extra $$, I'll stick with the QR-01 in the future.

No, you will still need a boss kit of some description e.g. MOMO, Sparco, OMP etc. You could, however, weld a shaft onto the steering shaft, but then you would not able to rotate the steering wheel to suit the wheel alignment.
