Hi Folks, im just about to get some new boots for my techy (15" bbs wheels )and would normally buy 888s, are these still the best value for money? or should i be looking at other brands now.

R888 aren't the default choice since Toyo put the prices up. Kumho V70 and even Dunlops are well worth a look.

Federal are producing a trackday tyre as well, could be worth a look.

do you guys go for the same size tyre as the road or do you go up a profile ? on 205 55 15 at the moment...

for the race series 195/55/15

I run 195/50/15 as they're significantly cheaper than 205s. Can't really tell any performance difference.

R888's are painfuly expensive now

I've just fitted 4 T1R's to my car. Got 195/50/15's from Camskill and they were £29 each! Can't go wrong with that to be honest. Shall be testing them this weekend so I'll report back

That is a good price and i ran them on a old porker that u used to track well r1s i think and they did perform but after having 888s on my tiger racing car im not sure i could go back to the normal road tyre...the difference on that was night and day.

T1Rs are nowhere near the same as R888s...

But the price on R888s is now too high. Dunlop DZ03s are probably better value as they are a bit cheaper and last a bit longer.

Size is a matter of preference and will depend on the power and weight of your car and the gearing...

There is no point in over-tyring the car...you will go slower due to extra road resistance and, if you want to maintain the gearing with large width tyres, you will need a stupidly low profile which will a) be more expensive and b) make the ride extremely hard, possibly affecting the handling, too...

I currently run 205/50/15 on my M3 with circa 220bhp and they are just fine (I tried 225/45/16, but the gearing isn't as good and the tyres cost more)

As above, not in the same class as R888s but I've been running Hankook's K110 V12 in 205/50 and they've been quite suprising(ly good). Evo didn't rate them in a recent tyre test so, as a mid-range tyre, I had modest expectations. They seem to have become much better with a little wear, they took about 500 miles of abuse to get them working well in both wet and dry. I have done both wet and dry airfield days, as well as daily use, and on both occasions I was pleased with both the grip and the ability for progressive sliding, something that R888s and 150bhp just would not entertain. Overall, the same price as T1Rs and I'm sure pretty much the same thing, just european and newer tech so might be more readily available in the future.

A friend has just got some Yoko AD08s in 195/50 and they were pretty cheap, ~£80 each. Will report on them when he finally gets his car on track. Other such options are the Hankook RS2 and Toyo R1R, the latter is very expensive though. These are more of a sports tyre for the track than a track tyre that can be used on the road, as such they have more tread and are better in wet conditions - an allrounder. I am considering the AD08s on my S2.

I got a new set of tyres mid summer and (for me) dunlops were almost 50% more then r888s, still wish i went for them, im not a fan of r888s after a couple of sets, they turn to jelly after 5-10 laps for me.

Where do you get the Dunlops? Would be after 225/45R17 for the S2.

Yoko AO50s in 205/50 R15 get a decent wrap - softer compounds than the AO48, so better suited to shorter track day sessions than longer races.
