e36 m42 sump on an e30 m42 engine?

as in title. can this be done. the e36 sump looks a lot easier to cut some hight out of and keep the capacity the same. it also looks like it runs along the engine front to back ware as the e30 runs left to right. as i need moor space on the right of the engine this is a good thing to.
my only thought is the oil pick up. in the e30 i think this is at the front of the engine but on the e36 the lower part of the sump is at the back. suggesting the sick up is there to.
any ideas?

The bolt holes are the same so yes it can bolt straight on. If being fitted to an E30 it will not work without some serious modification from what I've seen as it will smack the sub frame. Seeing as you're using your own chassis you might find a way around it.

Some chaps from Aus on M42 club are modding one. They're fitting it to an E30 and it they haven't got as far as cutting it yet but they have a plan for it: http://www.m42club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=8059

yer you are right about it fitting in my car as there are no schassis parts under the engine ware the e36 sump will sit.
i think it is just the oil pick up. cannot find any info as to ware it is on the e36 m42 cars. of to ask the chaps in that linkey i guess.

thanks for that.

Just trying to think back to when I did this the other way round but I guess the pick up bolts onto the timing case in the same place but is just on a long pipe which goes down the sump to the back of the engine and into the resevoir.

I'd imagine all you need to do is get items 9 and 10 from the E36 and pop them on the E30 M42 and job done.

They are the pickups for the sump resevoir. The E30 M42 one is very short and small because the pump is right over the sump. The E36 M42 will essentualy be the same but be on a longer pipe so it can get to the sump resevoir at the back of the engine.

If you look, all the other part numbers are the same :)

Not sure this will be of any use but this is the E30 M42 oil pickup:
