E30 Zone

Unsure what tyres to go for, for my track car.

Just missed out on some uberly stupid wrongly low priced 15inc bbs's and 6 slick dunlop tyres but yeah (grr)

So:

I can get toyo's through work. Will T1-r's be good enough? or do i spend extra on the R888's but be potentialy sodded on weter days?

I hear Kumho are good, what model are the production cars running?

Any others that aren't bad priced?

r888's are still ok on a damp track, but obviously don't work well in standing water

The toyo r888 tyres are the control tyres for the ttrs and pbmwc championships.

they don't use a different wet tyre, so i reckon they'd be worth the extra outlay.

You can also try the Dunlop DZ02G,I've just had these on the tourer for ma last trackday...as wi the toyo's dont like standin water,but really grippy tyre,quite progresive to on the limit.

R888 are excellent in the dry and still quite good in wet weather had them on a 106 rallye

I have T1-R's whihc are ok but they simply do not compare with the R888's or A048 which are simply awesome. If you can afford them and do little road usage I would go for a track-biased tyre.

I have had both the dunlops (mentioned above) and the R888 and my opinion is that the R888 is a far better tyre and is good value... If you go to www.tyretraders.co.uk then there cheap as well!

I've got some part worn 195/15's R888's I can flog you if you want to try before you buy? Need to get them off the wheels though........Unless you want a set of Compomotive MO's?

there was a test in a magazine regarding toyo r888's and toyo t1r's the reason they dont like standing water is the fact they only have like 5mm of tread when new compard to a t1r which has 8-9mm.

the r888's aquaplanned at 50mph where as the t1r's were fine at 70mph.

just to give people some kind of idea regarding them

If the t1r's has 5mm of tread they would still be far better in standing water.

The reason:

If you look at an r888 tyre, one in two of the tread patterns doesn't reach the outside of the tyre from memory.* Its channelled into nowhere in effect. The t1r tread pattern all of the grooves reach the outside edge of the tyre allowing the water to pass properly but giving you less road contact in dry conditions.

The t1rs also have a great percentage of groves than the r888, with the t1rs being smaller but deeper and more plentiful.


*Its too cold in the garage to double check this ATM.

Yeah i agree with you Jon due to the way the tyre is designed, just going on one of the main reasons for it. anyway im still gonna buy a set of r888's for use out at the nurburgring when i go.

Say I was to go for just a pair of R888 would it be best to put them on the frint or the back? in theory I want to know.

What about Kumho's? used un the PBMWC which ones do they use?

I've used two sets of Toyo R888's and they are great even on a wet track - just avoid standing water.

I bought my first set from Camskils tyres for £66 each 195/50/15 and then from a tyre man in a van at a Anglesey Track day run by Northloop and they were £65 each fitted and disposal of the old ones (down to Canvas!!.

you MUST go for 4 - no question

BTW - a guy in a E46 M3 CSL had toyo R888 on his 18 or 19 wheels and they cost him £250 each corner OUCH!



Picture after 100 miles on a hot track, in total I got 5 track days out of them ona car weighing 1100kgs

I've not used Kumhos much but the fella who raced my car before me reckoned they were 1.5 to 2 seconds slower than the Toyo's. This old boy has raced single seaters, sports cars etc so I took his word for it.

Only reason I asked about just buying a pair is, for example, they always say put the best tyres on the front as they obv drive and steer, just wondering what it was for a rwd.

That's cos a FWD car just drags it ar5e about like a dog with worms

You'll want four good tyres with a RWD..........Although shagged ones on the back is a good grin!

Ive got a set of Avon ZZR's which I was pretty impressed with. Held well round donnington and not too bad in the damp for semi-slicks too.

How much where the avons?

Had both toyo's on mine - The 888's are great fun but as already mentioned above they are quite useless in anything like proper wet if you want to still put the boot in.

T1R's good all round once you get the first couple of mm off them (airfield trackdays are good for this )and if you have to run it on the road a good option.

Yeah it set the tone for the day. Two corners later i put it in the armco and took all the timing gear out at the same time - not a popular bunny after that.

get two sets of tyres. You can fit a set in the boot of an E30.

A set of R888's for dry and a set of T1rs for wets.

Thats what i use.

I bought 3 sets of wheels on ebay 15" each time and have not paid more than £60. One has R888 on BBS, 1 has t1rs on TSW's and the other is the BMW 5 spoke wheels with road rubber re mould for sliding about.

Price of R888's have gone up start of this month by as much as £10 a tyre at some outlets. I use dunlop SP9000 for damp and Goodyear Hydra for really wet weather are best i ever used!

I used R888's for the first time this weekend, WELL impressed!
