Hi,

Anyone got advice and a company they use to insure their Track car with a cage that is also to be used on the road to get to the track?

I mention the cage as I've been told a few insurance companies shy away when anyone mentions the 'C' word...

UPdate 09.12.05 - I got a great quote keep reading this thread

Cheers

Ian

Adrian Flux (sorry, don't have contact details but should be easy to find on the net) are prob worth a call, they insure a lot of kit cars, customs and one offs etc so should be a lot less put out by a rollcage than the high street insurers.

Cheers

PS - If you are being really stung and have a few cars in the family, try a quote for traders insurance. My brother took out a policy as a mobile mechanic that cost about a grand, let him tax anything belonging to him, and was a lot cheaper than insuring his Corrado VR6, Espace V6 and Zx9R all seperately.
For sale - E30 320i racer project - sold.

ian

i have used flux - and you are right the cage is a real fcuker. when i first got my car i could not believe they wanted Ԛ£500 for for 5000 road miles limted for my track car that i would drive to circuits. i am 35 insure 3 other cars - definitely gonna explore trader route next year - for some reason which escapes me my ncb from the other cars could not be transferred to this policy.

ironically i dont think engine mods will weight it anything like the cage - which illicited a "can't help m8" response from the broker who looks after my other cars - which include a cosworth powered caterham 7 - which is actually cheaper to insure on limited mileage than my e30!!

i'd be interested to know if there are other "e30 modified friendly" brokers out there?

Heritage work fine for me, they've insured the race car for road use for the last couple of years. I've sent them photos and not heard anything back.
Tbh the car is only covered for its purchase value as a road car not its "market" value as a going race car but the cover is <Ԛ£300 for fully comp, including fire theft and transport on a trailer.

Yeah, its an arse too how NCB on other cars does nothing for you when geting a new policy on a second car. Surely it shows that you are a low risk driver??? 8O

Hi Brian - I am currently paying:

E36 328is Ԛ£330 pa
Discovery Ԛ£275 pa
E30 325 Ԛ£180 (3rd party )
1980 Sherpa van Ԛ£170 (the thing coat me only Ԛ£200 - no jokes about being robbed either!!!) but road tax is only Ԛ£5 pa winkeye
They are all featured on my website - see WWW icon below

I think I'm on the border of the trade insurance of Ԛ£1000 but I'm going to look into it, cheers for the information

And thanks to all you others - I'll let you know how I get on...

I've come to the conclusion that it's cheaper to get a towbar and trailer than it is to insure the track car. I'll keep it insured until i put a cage in it, then just use per-day insurance as and when and use it on the trailer for getting about to tracks. This is a bit skewed as i'm only 22 so insurance is a lot higher.

I'm paying 500 at the moment, but that's on a classic policy that doesn't allow mods. Hence why my interior is in the shed and not sold on ebay, so it can go back in the car if need be, or i have the excuse of having it out for cleaning.

Lloydie

I was just speaking to Herts Insurance Consultants (HIC) about a quote for my Soarer and asked the lad what their policy was on roll cages.

He said they are not a problem, the only mod they won't touch in a road car was nitrous.

The lad I spoke to was called James in sales and the number is 08451 290290, ask for him and see if you can get a half decent deal.
cheers

That's some cleaning going on agent006 winkeye

I have all my car's on limited milage of 5k per year and we are in the lowest insurance area for the UK, as if a car very rarely get's nicked it's because
1. The person couldn't get a cab and nicked a car to get home
2. The person who's car it was forgot where he parked it and reported it stolen!!

Just insured with Norton, under Heritage Classic Car insurance.
limited to 3k mileage.

0121 246 5050

BMW 325i Lowered suspension, 4 point harness, seats removed and a CAGE.

They want an extra Ԛ£40 for these mods! on top of the Ԛ£200 F/C premium.

Liverpool Victoria charged me an extra Ԛ£5 for the year when I told them about all my mods to my track car... Cage, harnesses, suspension, brakes, chip, etc...

Try them.

Giles.

No good if you want to drive it on the ring, as it has to be fully road legal :(

True, but keep it taxed and MOTd and just take out short term insurance for whenever you really need it on the road.

Hi,
I contacted Norton on line and got the quotation as detailed below.
My 1988 E30 325i is a road legal car (has Manx MOT) and is taxed. I detailed the mods as follows which I need to send Norton photo's of:
Cage
Bilstein Suspension
OMP RS Seats
6 point harnesses

The car is garaged overnight and will be limited to 1500 miles per year (I may increase to 3000). As I'm an old f4rt of 38 with a no claims this would help costs plus all my 9 points I gained from living in Manchester have now gone.

See quote from Heritage Classic Car Insurance / Norton below:

Thank you for your enquiry. Our quotation of Ԛ£196.25 is valid for 30 days and consists of the following: -

Annual Premium including

Insurance Premium Tax at 5%: Ԛ£131.25
Breakdown Cover: Ԛ£25.00
Legal Cover: Ԛ£15.00
Policy Charge: Ԛ£25.00

Vehicle Make: BMW Model: 325 Value: Ԛ£2500
Comprehensive Cover Subject to a Ԛ£150 Excess.
Use: Social, domestic & pleasure, excluding commuting. Mileage Limitation: 1500
(Any unused mileage may be carried over to the following year - on application)

To issue a policy on an agreed value basis I require six recent clear colour photographs (not polaroids) showing all four sides, the interior and the engine bay. Please sign and date the photographs on the reverse. You may email the photographs to XXXXXXXX@norton-ib.co.uk if your vehicle was purchased within the last six months a copy of the purchase receipt will be required. Until these are received, your cover will not be Agreed Value.

It's a really good price, a really easy on line form to complete which takes 5 mins, go to: www.norton-ib.co.uk/

In addition I have had a quote from Track day insurance for Ԛ£80 per day including travel to and from the track to the value of Ԛ£5000.00

Hope this helps others in the same situation :D
Cheers,
Ian
