What wheel bearings are you using?

Back in the day, when we were racing a VW Vento in the VW Cup, we would 'life' front wheel bearings to two meetings. Any more than this and they would start to rumble. Had one break up at Donny, cost us pole :x
This was on Dunlop D01J's, so slicks would be even worse.

Kim.

p.s. keep an eye on your front ball joints, too, they can snap and the results start at brown underpants and work their way up!!

Facing the wheel from the font (or the top), where is your wheels centre-line in relation to your bearing centre-line? In other words, what is your wheels offset?

In order to maximise bearing life your front wheels' centreline should lie 24mm inside from the face of the hub (disc included). The further you are away from this, the greater the load on the bearing and the sooner it will fail. On a council-special running 9J's up front (with spacers, else they won't fit) this may not be an issue since the car never sees any real action. On the track running slicks you can expect to replace bearings on a regular basis.

I could be wrong, but I suspect your problem may be an excessively large offset.

One of mine collapsed at Cadwell last year, should have paid more attention to increasingly loud rumbling noise :(

I had two new ones fitted, they were possible from GSF, someone recommended them, can't remember what brand they were but it was a funny name? £50 each iirc
