E30 Zone

hi all ,

my e39 seems to have developed an odd fault , i say odd as its never done it to myself only to others who have driven it and ive not been there to witness it

from what i can gather they get in and start it as normal then about 2 secs later it dies and will not restart off the key , will bump start almost straight away though and then it runs a bit rough , misses at idle then clears itself and will be perfect for weeks , then leave it a couple of days and it seems to do it ? car is a 1998 e39 520i touring , has new fuel filter , plugs etc fitted at the service it had about 1000 miles ago (were definatly replaced - i did the service) wondered if anyones come across this in the past before i go ripping the car apart

i just love the simplicity of my e30

do they have a cold start sensor ?

wondered if maybe it gets excited and floods itself thinking its like -30 outside

Inlet manifold sensor? You really need to code read it.

pop her in for a diagnostic check dude, I have FULL dealer level diag up to '06

hey ant , ive put it on snap-on diagnostics whilst it was having a moment and it didnt find any fault codes , live data all seemed ok etc.....

problem is it wont do it now for ages im sure but i know i havent fixed it and im damn certain it will do it again at some stage

Could be related - I had an 97' E39 523i and if you started it from cold and moved it a short distance then shut it down it done the same.
Engine would get flooded so if you came to start it up it would just whirr over without firing up. Best left alone for a while for the juice to evaporate and then it would fire up no problem. I know some guys removed plugs to get the juice to evaporate quick and then they were away.
Quite a regular occurence I found out when I researched it on www.bmwland.co.uk
Trick is don't just move your car a short distance, let it warm up for a minute or so, then it will not be flooded next time you start up.
