Most E21's are rusty old wayward handling turds. An E30 is a better car in every possible way. Regarding the price for an E21 323i - about £70 scrap
If you really want a clean decent one, keep an eye on Old Colonel Cars. They've had a few really nice examples in the past but expect to pay at least 2-3K.

Having owned and run two E21 323i's, it's not something I would own again. Think of the oldest and rustiest E30 and then go a generation older. Without the LSD and Bilsteins they are vile, roly poly sheds. A tidy £600 325i is a far, far better car.
A really nice E21 with a slipper and proper suspension is a fun car but they are very hard to find and the K Jet 2.3 engine isn't that great - 143 bhp, whoopee. A 318iS or 318Ti Compact will be keeping up with you. I would start with a really solid E21 316 late shell of which there are still a few, and build it up with a 2.5 Motronic engine, 5 speed overdrive box and the right bits.

Hi
If you want a good e21 323i set aside 2.5k and look for a few months, if you want an e21 project car buy the best shell you can find & don't worry about anything else, most cars turn up on eBay than any were else.
And the handling is not as bad as people say when the suspension is tight (but most are crap due to knackered bushes, ride height etc.) and they can be made to handle as good as any car with rear semi trailing arms and McPherson struts, the problem is that there is not a lot of the shelf, and what there is expensive, coilovers, big F&R brakes and ARB's will set you back about 2.5k (about the same for an e30), and cossie tension struts help out as the frond set up is very similar to the sierra.
At a track day my e21 has no problem keeping pace with the e30's

I know of a pretty good E21 320. It's a 2L M10 engine with 70k on the clock. Nice car, needs a new NS front wing. Rest looks solid enough. PM me if interested.

Manual, 148,000 miles, E21, 1983 BMW 316, 1800cc, 2 door coupe, bronze, quad head lights, beige interior, rare BBS alloys, 3 owners. Engine runs perfectly. Completely original and comes with lots of history and receipts. The car is MOT'd till February 2008. Always kept clean as the pics testify and has been well looked after, will be very sad to see it go but situation dictates sale. Open to sensible offers. £995. ono

Well well well, thats my old E21. Sure wish i never sold that!
It was a very solid car, just needed the front panel painting due to stone chips, new headlights as they had corrosion in them, seats aren't the originals either, they were well past it when i had the car. There was also a dent or two in the bonnet and a few scabs around/on the doors
All looks to have been tidied up nicely now though.
If only i could have it back for the price i got it for

The E21 320 (M10 - M43/1) is 1990cc and produces 109bhp and 157ft/lb torque and weighs 1036kgs.
The E21 320 (M20b20 carb) is 1990cc and produces 120bhp and 121ft/lb torque and weighs 1090kgs.
The M10 is a much more tunable and durable engine.
