Engines in 3's, 5's and 7's....

This topic is about a diesel

...so those allergic can look away now
Will a 330D Sport have the same engine as the 530D sport or 730D Sport???? (can't see it being the case...but it would be great if it was

)
The reason I ask is... My mate had a 730D Sport....and while I normaly hate diesels....this car blew my mind....for a diesel it had stupid power (considering it weighs about 2 tonnes!!!), and was just wondering if they use the same engines in the smaller cars...as that engine in a 3 series would be seriously quick for a standard production car!!!
When in Manual sport mode we took it from stand still to 110MPH and it was still pulling like mad!!! This literally threw you back into your seat (didn't have my belt on, and was leaning forward

)
We also went past 155MPH...so was it de-limitered or the usual high-speed reading being wrong???
Also, I have been told that the 730D sport engine is the most powerful diesel engine used in production cars...is this true...or sales talk????

mmm 380 ft lbs of torque at 2000 revs - yes please, will sir be having fries with that.
7.8 second 0-60 in a 7 series!! i love it - that thing is an animal
to answer your question i think its possible as both the 330d and 730d are listed as 230 bhp but i have only the torque figure for the 7 series.... and the electrical issues fitting that to an e30 would qualify you for several brands of straight jacket.

generally all the bmw models share the various engines, as far as i am aware this is still the case

I would of thought so.
Why would bmw design a new engine when they can use one from current models?
Would cost too much money when they have a great engine already.

Thats definatey sales talk about it being the most powerfull production car diesel, you only got to look at some of them huge american pick ups, some of which are v10's! There is also a more powerfull bmw production diesel, the european LHD only e38 740d, i'm pretty sure its a twin turbo v8 with well over 400 lbft and the e60 535d twin turbo 3.0 with over 400 lbft!
Turbo diesels are torque monsters and torque equalls acceleration!
Still preffer petrol engines though!!!!!

that is sales talk, but they're right about the same engines. the 3.0litre twin turbo is better and the M67 V8 diesel, single turbo (IIRC) is an animal!!
the DDE's are programmed in slightly different ways too, so the cars behave differently. watch out for turbos though

730d uses a more powerful version of the 3.0d
new facelifted 5's have an uprated 3.0d also.. 535/335d's are the ones you want

VW Toureg Diesel is more powerful. 518lb/ft torque at peak if memory serves.
The BMW might be most powerful for it's capacity, but it is not most powerful full stop.

No ideal what they meant...but it definately moves
That would make the 330D a very quick car!!!!
One of the reasons i started this thread was because i know someone who sold a e46 325i and bought a 330D....and he claimed it was quicker....
wasn't sure what to make of it....but i figured if it did have the same engine as the 730D, then it would definately be quick!!
Sounded good aswell.... no tractor rattle....just a nice whistle as he floored it into the distance
