Haven't seen this one posted up in a while!
If you think Merc make rubbish these days, try driving the lorries, some of the worst on the road!

I did temping work last summer for BMW Bracknell, delivering parts to the dealers at night, using their w#nk Merc lorries - they definitely aren't the best to drive - soooo slow !!

whats wrong with mercs?
ok a standard low spec C class is as dull as dishwater, in exactly the same way that a 3 series is.
but what about the serious metal. Amg cls, and the sl65. Bmw is nowhere in that company, M cars included.
hhmm, 325i sport or a late SEC in black with bbs split rims.

Mercs are shit these days, Granted AMG's are cool but still shit. Sprinter vans are good aswell but thats a van and not a car.

Small stuff is shit, especially once its done a few miles, but IMO some of the bigger chassis are good quality

Best compare the AMG stuff like for like with Alpina then.
To paraphrase, modern mercs are rubbish.

a friend of mine has one of these - it's been back at the Dealers more times than even a stupidly exaggerated story about how unreliable cars are.
(note I'm ahead of him in my GTi

)
It's basically a very expensive cat-shade

(look carefully)

Know exactly what you mean fella......My dads mate had a SL55 AMG and it was back at the dealers more than on the road being driven......My dads boss had a CL500 a couple of years ago and he had same sort of problems. Both people now hate mercs and would never have one ever again.

ummm Jon i think thats rubbish a new M5 is a far better car overall than a straight line merchant/power figure obsessed AMG's
Alpina's? You just can't knock them!
that beetle looking thing pictured is a shocking heap of sh!t
As my dad says they are just Taxi's

I was following a new SL yesterday, and thought from a slight distance that it was a Mondeo!
I've always prefered the equivalent BMW to Merc. They are old man's cars. Aren't all Merc autos? Bloody things.
Shame the new M5 isn't a full manual. (MANual - see that?)

I've been thinking this as well - new Mercs don't just look like a Mondeo, but the outgoing Mondeo!

a 6 series? I don't think so.......
Ford Anglia with a chopped-down roof that's been s-t-r-e-t-c-h-e-d
I know the Golf ain't a big car, but look at the difference

Nobody ever bought a Merc for driver appeal. AMG or not.
Mercs lose almost every single head-to-head in any magazine.
BMW M-Cars blow Mercs clean away - you must have been trying a wind up with that comment. AMG 's are thuggish, basic, crass attempts at sports cars.
Then there's the Rolls/BMW V the Merc/Maybach. Ahem.

Nothing would blow that AMG away.... nothing.
Going round corners... maybe; who knows... but blown away? No.

Pug-ugly, those Merc CLS bloat-barges. The AMG version is supposed to go like a very fast banana however, with its 6.2/6.3 twin-turbo V12. I blame the American Chrysler influence; sadly BMW has gone the same way with the Bangle design of late. Bloody Yanks

I've driven Merc sprinter vans a fair bit and they're pretty damn quick for a long wheel based van but as e36boy said, its a van not a car.
I personally think the Merc CLS is a very nice looking car, and has very sexy lines. However I think its a little bit like being a dog person or a cat person, I'm definitely more of a BMW person than a Merc person....and for the record a dog person too

Hey Jon how you doing man.
I agree with you, my bro's got an E55 as a daily runner and is currently selling a SL55. Both serious motors and many times he's chewed up E46 M3's from the lights in the E class. Don't get me wrong I like my beemers and have a couple of sports which I'm thinking of selling for a later model but I don't think we can knock Mercs. You need to ride in one before making a judgement. Each to their own I suppose.

Oh i suppose you have a handfull of M-cars in your stable.
you still want those seats?????

Not all Mercs are bad - the older ones were once probably the best cars on the road. They were always built to a standard, not a price and the last 'proper' Merc was possibly the 190 - notice how many old D and E reg ones you still see floating about. The W126 and W123 were better still but it started to go downhill with the W124 which although not a bad car early on in it's life isn't a patch on the E34 5 Series - I've seen countless very rusty examples on J-K plate.
I wouldn't touch any Merc made in the last 10-15 years. The basic ones do nothing a Ford can't do a whole lot better.

I have to agree andy- w123 300/200d live in their hundreds of thousands on the continent, and basically built africa along with the Landy and the Pug 505 estate
w126 560 is a nice old barge, but expensive to run
