Who have the best technology to make an engine today?
Some will say Ferrari, some will say BMW.... But I think maybe the best manufactor of engines today is Audi?

lol, how contreversal could this thread be! I'd say Audi are very good for pushing things forward, the diesel Le Mans car for example.

But i guess you need to look at the ultimate engines used in racing today, which of course are F1 lumps, so it has to be Ferrari and Renault imo.. although i'm sure you could find pretty unigue and special engines in lesser vehicles, such as VW's turbo'd and supercharged 1.4.

What about road engines?

I personally think the honda v-tech engines are awesome.

VAG group have to be at the forefront of technology surely, the engines in that group range from 100mpg diesels (not yet used in a production car but developed none the less) to v10 powerhouses used in the lambo range.

What about the new BMW engine that runs on hydrogen?? Available now apparently from what i read the other day - 7 series engine i think!!

Nothing technologicaly advanced in this. No more complex than running on LPG.

Matter of opinion whether you consider developing engines to run on this disgusting, slimy, smelly muck is a step forward.

To me theres 3 manufacturers who I would put the mortgage on producing a decent performance engine.

Ferrari
BMW
& Honda

Oh as above, Diesel is more carconognic (sp?) to humans than Unleaded fuel. But that doenst seem tostop all those mummies with their Diesel 4x4s doing the school run. I reckon in 10 years we'll have all sorts of weird respiratory problems!

best engines with out a doubt is ermmmmmmmm

I'd say Honda or Toyota.

Just had to put my late 2 pence worth in.

Ferrari have to be disocunted as they have no background in making engines that last in the real world. F1 Tech may help with performance but thos engines are designed to last from 4-8 races and less than that if they are built for total speed.

You look at innovation and Honda and BMW must be near the top. BMW's staright six has been refined over 20 years! Honda never makes anything that will not outperform or is not superior to the equivalent on the market.

Having said that, the longest running engine with no maor parts change if I recall correctly was an 80's Mercedes E-Class - over 700,000 miles! Horrible image but early Mercs were utter tanks.

It's got to go to BMW for me, they have the balance of performance, innovation, smoothness and longevity.

BMW's staright six has been refined over 20 years!

Think basic physics has honed it for them to be honest.

It's nice that BMW choose to stick with the configuration when pretty much everyone else is using inferior but easier/cheaper to make setups.

VAG? why must they persevere with these narrow angle V engines? And their W configs seem absolutely lame in terms of specific power and efficiency.

Honda stands head and shoulders above all of them IMHO, who else has used oval pistons, twin conrods and 8 valves a cyclinder in a road engine?

They also had variable valve timing in place way before BMW, their Nicasil bores last as well, irrespective of what fuel is used in them(no matter what b@llox BMW said, fuel wasnt the cause of this, it was just poor manufacturing)

Always biggupped Honda from day one. Got no problem giving them the gong to a close second BMW.

4.2 litre v8 that revs to 8k and makes 420 brake? and weighs fuck all? that gets my vote - Audi/VAG
