I think the e39 2.5 diesals were of bigger power because my dad had an e34 525 tds which was same engine as the 325 tds e36. Normally the later models are of quite abit more power.

164bhp, not really that interested in the power.
I want the superb smooth economical ride.

they are still suprisingly capable to be honest, my dad has had a touring and it was a nice car, handled quite well too, and plenty of torque

very wise choice sir. I really cant say a bad word about the e39. My dad has had 2 a '98 523i from new had auto and air con really nice car to drive, maybe just needed a little more go in it but was more than capable. Atm he has a 530d '02 with leather air con, cd, auto really really nice car and had no problems with it at all. Only things that needed replacing were the rear arb drop links Ԛ£15 each from dealers. really nice car again.

The big thing on these is oilk and filter every 7000 miles, plus leaving the engine to idle for 30 secs before switching off regardless of whether you've caned it or not. They're not quite as quick as the 530d of course but they're not bad. The old 525tds was a slug, bloody gruesome things albeit more reliable inb older age.
