This engine is fairly bomb proof in a car application but in a 2.5 tonne range rover they are really struggling, head gaskets and cracked heads are common. Everything crossed !

if ther's no oil in the water, odd on it'll be a water pump. EVERY bmw engine i've had (1.8 M10(?), early 2.0 M20, late 2.0 M20, late 2.5 M20, late 3.5 M30) has needed a new one! cheap and faily easy to do though.

i had this problem in my tds - was the waterpump. Must say though - the car was clever enough not to go out of first gear to protect the engine!
