not a patch on an e24-even in coupe form.

these new m5/6s lose the appeal of the M cars for me- too much trickery and comfort, and not enough adrenaline.

bloody power button too, if you have a car with 507bhp you should know how to use it in any situ...

i'd have an e34 3.8 m5 touring, insured, serviced and fuelled for 10 years before I spunked the money on that.

Its none too pretty either (in my eyes)

I think the next styling exercise that BMW do should lend itself to the sharknose lines of the 70's - 80's. A modern take on the sharp, shark-like style... now that would be worth shouting about. 8)

New M5/M6's are stunning cars! Drop top looks beautiful and i reckon will sound just a bit nice esp with the top down through a tunnel!

I think the power button is partly due to not really needing 507bhp to drive round town with  With it off they are smoother at low speeds

this is probably very true, but IMHO the M cars aint about "smooth at low speeds" more about the most efficient and rapid way to get from point A-B.

I just feel its a "dumbing down" of the senses transmitted to the driver. My touring feels a lot more alive and potent than many newer cars theat could easily beat it, if you know what I mean

I hate all these power buttons. Why cant it be full on all the time. It is an M car after all! Not keen on the new ones looks either tbh. Old 6's are much nicer than new ones. Same with old 5's too! The styling department on new BM's has gone well downhill!

The 5 & 6's look like they were designed to be all smooth at the rear and then someone said "hang on, we can't get the golf bag in the boot" so they just extended the boot lid out to make more room and didn't give a toss what it looked like

The only other BM i like now is the 46 :(

Is it me or have they taken out the engine and just put a flat sheet of plastic in instead? I hate the way they feel they have to tidy up engine bays now so that you can't actually see anything at alll.

I think the power button is a great idea. people have been after that kind of thing with aftermarket management systems for years. power button is just a factory installed multi-map engine management system. Bloody great idea and the only reason it's on these newer cars is because the technology has matured a bit. Would be a bit tricky to give the driver a away to swap his carb jet sizes whilist driving around town, lol. Tuning of a car used to be a compromise - either all power or eco/driveable. Now you don't have to compromise so much.

For my money what would make the M cars better these days would be drop 50% of the weight - focus those designers/engineers on a a very strong lightweight modern material chassis. Take the SL55 for example - a really nice car, but it's two-bloody tonnes!

The fact that they went to all that effort reducing the weight on the Coupe then introducing a Conv conflicts with that objective. In addition, I think the car has a somewhat bad image these days.

ok not just round town, but in the snow/wet etc..

also they are a bit more economical with M button off, my dad averaged something stupid like 11mpg in an M6 but he had the button on at all times and drove it pretty hard with v few m/way runs

the button imo is a great idea, esp in todays health and safety era

No matter what BMW says, that is not an M6, or even a 6series.

This is an M6, always and forever

i believe the power reduction option has to do with keeping the green party happy and/or fuel consumption. Although if it were me...id rather have 507 hp ALL the time..

And another thing...all that power, it seems a bit slow for a v10 on the track after watching top gear's review of it...even the Porsche outbeat it....thats embarassing if you ask me. I think they needed to lighten it up more and have a LOT less bells and whistles.
