E34 dual sunroof help

I'm fixing up a 1995 525ix tourer.
When I got it, the sunroofs didn't budge and there was a noisy rattle from the front when the sunroof motor was activated. I assumed it was the gears not connecting properly with the front panel. So, removed the clutch from it, stuck in an Allen key and the same result. Today I swapped out the front motor for a known working one and got the same result. The teeth on the original motor were worn down and one was snapped off.
Next I cleaned and regreased the 'worm' cables and then tried again with the Allan key, I managed to get the front sunroof to tilt up but no sliding. I greased the runners and the panel whilst it was raised.
Next I tried to move the cables manually, using a screwdriver and being careful not to bend the metal cable which the gear grips onto. They would both move only so far. I'm concluding the cables are seized somewhere.
The rear roof works from the motor.
Any assistance would be appreciated, I have a full tray which worked fine, with the corresponding motors as a spare, just don't want to have to change it all !
