E21 Council Edition

Once upon a time I owned an orange 323i, to which I fitted an m52/2.8 & coilovers etc.

Image

Then, one day, this happened....

Image

An electrical issue meant the dash wiring shorted out and my car and 3 years hard work went up in flames.

A bit of internet action and I bagged myself a mint 316 which had spent a good few years stored in a concrete bunker in France. It cost a bit more than I wanted to pay, but the condition made it worth the extra. It was the most basic, 4 speed 316 I've seen, but the condition of the shell was great.

Image

Once it arrived home, I packed it off to my pal in Essex. He owns www.pristinebodyworks.co.uk and does damn fine work.

Image

Over the next few months I spent my pocket money on a few parts, to add to the stuff salvaged from MIB.

Nytrex triple threat NOS system.

Image

323i rear chassis rail (200 mile round trip!)

Image

Meanwhile, the shell was stripped and went for blasting.

Image

This is the only bit of rust on the whole shell. (below rad) So we let new metal in.

Image

I'd always liked the colour of MIB, so stuck with orange again. It's BMW Fire Orange from the GTS M3.

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Unfortunately, as the paint went off, it soon became clear there was a problem with the mix and the primer was still bleeding through. Gutted.

Whilst I thought about my next move, the postman brought these from the good people at Cat Camshafts. I had planned on fitting US spec M3 cams but these are a nicer alternative. Thank you Cat!

Image

The diff mounts are came from the US and servo and brake upgrade were SVC & WMS Brakes respectively.

Stack gauges. I know they're only gauges but they're excellent quality.

Image

The 6x9's were an eBay bargain at £11.00!

Image

On impulse I opted for Laguna Seca blue.

Image

While still more bits were arriving.

Image

Keri @ WMS has done an awesome job on replicating the cosworth kit I was running on MIB.

Image

The paint finish looks awesome.

Image

Image

NOS rear lenses arrived. I could have probably got away with using the old ones but inspired by the other builds on here, I figured I would go the extra mile - or try to anyway.

Image

Custom brake install meant we could bin the OE servo and convoluted linkage.

Image

The m50 inlet swap is done and the 6 branch is also on. The nitrous jets are going on and going to be hidden beneath the inlet manifold. There's also a lightened flywheel and uprated AP clutch.

It's going to look so much better with all the redundant e36 wiring being binned and no OE fuse box and clutter.

Image

Image

Image

Image

Brake kit from WMS. They're very nice and super light.

Image

Image

Image

Opted the replace the plastic thermostat housing with a nice alloy one.

Image

I know an e21 interior is pretty basic but opted to go for a stainless gearknob from Storm.

Image

Image

The super light flywheel eventually arrived.

Image

Image

Things are slowly moving along but with so much to do, and lots of custom bits, it's taking a while.

Image

Image

Image

Image

Well I went and saw MIB yesterday and there's been a fair bit of progress, with lots of the less obvious jobs now finished.

The e36 loom has been split and any superfluous wiring is being deleted. The OE fuse box is being junked and the whole engine bay will be much less cluttered. The Cat Camshafts have also been installed.

Image

The new fuel lines, pump and sender are also in.

Image

The cage has been painted, the floor strengthened and we are just waiting on new front coilovers from Gaz and the new front brakes can finally go on. Whilst there is still a bit to do, we are definitely making real progress now. In fact, next week it's off to Quest Motorsport for the exhaust manifold and system to be fitted.

Image

6 branch fits perfectly. The system isn't quite as wanted but it'll mean we can finally fire the engine up!

Next on the agenda is to fit the new Gaz front suspension and WMS Braking Systems kit. The new loom needs finishing too. There still a way to go but we're getting there! :)

Image

Image

Image

Image

The manifold mods and exhaust are complete now.

Image

Image

The new front coilovers are GAZ golds although we painted them black as they're a bit more subtle.

Image

Image

The boot spoiler is a fiberglass copy of a genuine BMW Motorsport ''ducktail'' which means I can prep and paint it in body colour. I really like how squat and agressive the stance is and the spoiler really adds to that.

Image

Image

Image

New wheel bearings all round and can finally get the new WMS billet 4 pot callipers & 298mm discs on. Keri @ WMS did a great job with getting everything machined accurately and it all went on without a hitch. Using braided hoses and HAWK fast road pads.

Image

Image

The Cat fast road cams are in and timed up. The current job is fitting the new wiring loom that came from the USA. It's a major pain re-wiring the whole car but I am determined to lose the OE bullet fuse box and have proper blade fuses etc. I'm also fitting a proper alarm and immobiliser with tracker.

Been looking at making a few subtle detail changes to the trim of my road car, so looked at e46 M3's in laguna for some inspiration. I really like the black chrome effect some have on their alloys and want to do the centre grill. The problem has been finding a company that still does it. Hopefully I've found somewhere that does a black nickel process, so I managed to split my spare grill and sent it off to be done. I know I could have just gone with satin black but I don't want to lose the whole chrome or polished look. I may get the wheels done also?

Image

Also managed to snag a RHD a/c console.

Image
Image

I know my wheel choice isn't for everyone, but I'm really happy with the way they look.

Image

Image

The remote servo has been mounted beneath the inlet manifold and should easily be hidden from view. The whole braking system is far better than it was with the OE servo and linkage. I'm really chuffed with the way it's gone together and now much tidier the engine bay is now.

Image

It's taken a while but nearly all of the e36 loom we didn't need, has been removed. The ECU and fuse box are going to be mounted where the glove box usually sits. The lid will remain as a cover for them though.

Image

Image

Image

Image

Well I went to Pristine Bodyworks smart new premises today and saw MIB. The move has delayed work on MIB but it should be getting painted in the next couple of weeks. Mechanically everything is just about finished, so once painted, it just leaves wiring and interior. We're definitely on the home straight at last. :)

Image

Smart new offices have nearly been completed inside the workshop space.

Image

Hopefully the next update will come as the prep work starts for paint.

Image

Image

Hopefully, now the mechanical mods are finished, we can get the car painted in the next 2 weeks. There's just the wiring and interior trim to go then. The aim is to have it on the road this Spring anyway.

WOW, impressive work

How much would a M52 conversion on a E21 cost, drive in/drive out?

I've asked Mick at www.pristinebodyworks.co.uk to give me a ballpark figure. He's done a fair bit of development since my orange car and he's got the templates now, for the custom mounts etc. He's also totally redesigned the braking system, using the remote servo and kit from WMS. Thankfully it means there's no convoluted pedal linkage or lump of iron, to mount the original servo. There's also a lot less of the e36 loom and the whole engine bay is way, way less cluttered. The six branch is actually a modified e36 item, but obviously the OE one can be used instead. I cannot praise Mick's work highly enough either. He is very methodical and certainly isn't one to cut corners.

Dependent of what level of conversion you'd be looking at and including of parts like custom alloy rad, modified sump etc, you'd be looking at around £3k. When you consider how many custom parts there are (such as engine mounts etc) and the amount of fabrication (exhaust etc), wiring etc I think that's reasonable. Obviously the work is also warranted.

The brake conversion, using the remote servo kit (£299) and either Wilwoods or WMS, plus an E12 LSD conversion are also available. I know I'm biased but the brake conversion is a huge improvement over stock. You can use an E36 M3 gearbox but you'll need to convert the speedo to work with an electronic sensor.

Thanks guys.

I'm on the hunt for someone who can remap the ECU and wondered what the best route to take would be? Anyone know the limitations of the standard ECU and injectors, or are they fine for my needs?

We're just finishing off the wiring at the moment. I wanted to lose the under bonnet fuse box and bullet fuses, as they're a pain in the arse. I bought a complete 'universal' loom and blade style fuse box from the USA & Kwikwire. The e36 part of the loom has been stripped right back so only the absolute bare minimum remains, to be spliced in. The glove box lid will remain but all it does now is hide the ECU and the new, blade style fuse box and relays. There's hardly any wiring at all visible in the engine bay.

As it's going to be my daily driver, I'm going to fit a half decent stereo. I have a Nakamichi head unit and amps. I also have a slimline Clarion sub to go under the passenger seat. It's all very plain looking, simple stuff, but should be a nice clean look overall.

Image

Image

Image

Below the gauges I'm fitting a pre facelift AC spec' centre console to house my head unit. I like the simple and subtle design.

Image

Prototipo 3 spoke steering wheel and the Recaros will finish things off. :) The seats were a steal at under £200 and they're in perfect condition. The rear cage means the inertia belts no longer fit, so I have black Safety Devices harnesses instead.

Image

Am currently looking at carpet types and colours.

Great stuff Hoobs, looking forward to the result of all this hard work. A real shame about the orange one :(

It was, yeah. I'd had it a few years and was quite attached to it. Mind you, I've had this one for 18 months and have never even driven it! :) I've been able to build this into the e21 I wanted though. I know they're not everyones cup of tea but I've spent a lot of time and effort gathering parts for this build. The final piece has been a high ratio steering rack, which I'm collecting on Sunday. The design of the e21 steering means it's not as easy as simply using the rack from another model and e21 quick racks are rare as hens teeth.

The engine, in it's current spec, with Cat cams, m50 inlet, six branch, 4.5kg flywheel and BBTB should be good for about 240+. It also has a triple threat nitrous install, running 75bhp a jet, so I hope to see nearer 320 in total. I won't be running the gas every day though obviously.

eBay. I have a Nakamichi tape deck available if you're interested?

Have the final part needed thanks to robOr. :) The quick-rack needs cleaning up and painting, prior to being fitted. I was lucky to secure this one, as the company I found to manufacture a batch of new ones are still some way off them being ready. Fortunately this one has done very few miles and is ready to go in. I'm not a fan of PAS on e21's anyway, but even with the faster rack, the steering isn't overly heavy. Without it, the steering is a bit on the slow side at 4:1 lock to lock. Given how e21 oversteer it needs to be quicker than that. I've got a slightly smaller than stock Prototipo steering wheel also.

Went over to Pristine today and dropped the quick-rack and amp off.

Image

Spotted a Vauxhall HA and Cosworth in for restoration.

Image

Image

Another CSL in for new panels.

Image

The e36 loom has been stripped right back and is being spliced into the e21 loom, with the new fuse box and kwik-wire kit.

Image

Image

Image

You can see the difference in engine position, now that there are custom mounts. Might have to look into a sump guard dependent on final ride height?

Image

Image

Image

Spotted Aydin's 323i looking stunning, with all new chassis rails and newly painted engine bay.

Image

Image

Rad is off to aqua-jet and once spotless, the top outlet is being moved so that regular e36 silicon hoses will fit without any joins.

Image

Mick is aiming to paint MIB within a couple or three weeks, so that we can finally start building to the finished result. Obviously it'll need to go to the trimmer for new carpets and the original seat mounts are coming out, so the Recaros can be fitted nice and low. It's been a long slog but we're in the home stretch now. :)
