330i touring sport individual - SOLD

Well e39 has gone after serving impeccably for 30 months

It's replacement was purchased at the end of march and before was put to work it had a few bits done

some things being essential and others being preventative maintenance

here were some teaser shots i posted on another thread

It is a manual 330i sport touring individual. It's a sept 2002 built and registered car with individual Techno Violet paint, individual embossed yellow leather and poplar natural wood, MV1's, climate control, folding mirrors, heated seats. 144,000 miles, full main dealer history, all original paint no past accident damage, original supplying dealer number plates. While it was a bit leggy the overall condition & spec was bang on and what i wanted bar 2 things, xenons and electric seats. the latter i can live without.

However it wasn't perfect. A couple things I wasn't 100% happy with but not enough to put me off buying it for a sensible price.

1: it needed tyres all round
2: it has a nasty pull to the left and shaking at 60mph
3: it was over cooling when cruising at higher speeds

All these things were easy fixes so I bought it and took it straight back to the trusty mechanics garage. It was given a thorough inspection and nothing else was found to be needing attention bar one thing (on to that later) and did a full diagnostic check and its was all good

Next day I ordered a genuine thermostat to fix the over cooling problem, as a precaution we changed the water pump and drive belt.

Next up tyres, I opted for a set of Goodyear eagle F1 asymetrics. An awesome tyre which I had on my 530i. But instead of going with OEM sizes all round I decided to go for a slightly slimmer 245 width tyre on the back. Personally I think a 255 is over kill with 235bhp. Now some people like MV1's, I hate them. To make matters worse they could do with a refurb. There's no way I was going to fit tyres to these wheels let alone refurb them
So i was on the hunt for wheels. A couple of set caught my eye but they were all low ET and I refuse to start fu cking about with tyres stretching and all that shite. Not only that i'd have to get coilovers to set the ride hight perfectly and i'm not going go down that route, not on a daily ! been there done that twice. while dont have fillings i'm not running cheap coilovers on a daily which will demolish all levels of comfort the car has and destroy them selves and the turrets which are known to crack

I was looking for a set of MV2's or nice 18"' OEM wheels when I came across a set or genuine 18" Racing Dynamics RD2's, new & in their boxes. Price was right and I went to pick them up. They are a square set (all 8j) with a slightly lower et than the OEM wheels. Tyres were fitted, wheels protected with Wolfs Chemicals Rim Shield and left to one side.

Image

Image

Now, as I said the car was pulling to one side, the car was looked at and had alignment check to see if that would give an indication as to why, the toe was slightly out as suspected.

Now with the RD2's going on and the car being a big leggy I though it would be a sensible idea to overhaul the suspension. it was ok, no nasty noises but just a bit tired and on inspection we found that one of the rear springs was broken

So this was ordered

Image

It's the H&R sport cup kit, with a 55/35 drop over stock suspension. This being a sport is a touch lower than a regular touring, it is what was needed to bring the nose down a touch. New top mounts, bump stops & reinforcement plates were ordered from BMW. Before fitting I remover the camber pin from the front top mounts so I could correct the excessive negative camber from the front once it was all fitted

Talking of fitting, the stripping of the back was a PITA ! I think I did well, I only had one trim pin left behind when I re assembled it lol

You can see here against the slotted front plates which mirror the slotted turrets. so you have some scope for about 1.5 degrees of adjustment.

Image

So once it was all fitted the RD's were fitted and it was taken back to the local alignment place and set up with factory settings. It needed a few adjustments which was no surprise

Image

Then it i took it for a 100 mile shake down drive and i can report it is spot on !

I did consider a bilstein B12 kit with B8 shocks and the eibach sport springs however they would possibly be too firm for daily use on the wonderful roads here in London which is why I went for the H&R kit, it offers a more compliant ride with great handling

The suspension needs to settle in a big more and I expect the front to drop about 5mm more and once that's happened I'll fit some 5mm spacers on the front to fill the arches a bit more. The back is just right and if that drops any more I'll get a pair of thicker spring pads.

So for now, here's how the car looks.

so, back to the 2 options the car doesnt have. electric seats, not that bothered and not going to happen but xenons i need. i can not live with out them. so, i managed to pick a pair off genuine xenon saloon/touring headlamps complete with bulbs an ballasts for a fair price of £270. they should in theory be plug and play with a quick software update. at the same time i'll be fitting some angel eyes.
i've also got smoked front and side indicators ready to go on and LED numberplate lights to freshen the look of the car. there will all go on when i detail it. i'm also considering to get new headlamp outer covers but i'll only get them if i cant correct any of the ones i have.

with smoked lights on the front and side i'm looking at getting a set of rear lamps in red with smoked indicator, the lenses on the tailgate look aged so they could so with replacing

a couple of other things worth noting are that is has black & silver carbon badges, this will be replaced with OEM badges

it has carbon look grill, this will be painted gloss black to match the high gloss shadow line

it will also remover the 330i badged from the tailgate

one final thing is the bumper trims. i'm debating weather to colour code them or not, the door moulding are already colour coded .........any thoughts guys

once a get a chance to do some paint correction and detail it i'll get some more decent pictures up

Wow thats nice Kos. What a great colour combo. I like the RD wheels too, much nicer than MV1's or MV2's which I never liked.

Kos, what the ride quailty like ? mine handles sweet but crashes through every single minute pothole , cant help thinking the lesser unsprung mass of the RD's vs the MV2 s has got to add to the party somewhat too.

Factory Mtechic2 setup on my turd is just plain awful.

+1 mine was great on smooth tarmac but godawful as soon as you got onto "normal" roads. I was quite relieved to get into something a bit more forgiving TBH - the roads round here are terrible

Thos RD wheels look the shizzle

Don't forget, arch liners out ASAP and get the arch lips cleaned out and 'xoyled.

E46's just have a poor ride. Even the resident 320d on stock springs and 16's is harsh.

Very nice Kos, the techno purple colour is wicked.! Can't beat a 330i e46, best cars on the road.!

The Mtech stuff is as rob says fine one decent roads, then again most suspension would be lol

The H&R is is spot on for me, it is a well set up kit. I was thinking about a b12 kit from bilstein however, as my driving is more urban I think I made a the sensible choice

It will still crash through pot holes but I do my best to avoid them even if it makes it look like theses a pissed person driving

Yesterday I spent the day cleaning up the engine bay and interior

Interior needed a good clean, lots of dust, grime & dog hair !

What has come to light is that one of the previous owners had a go at cleaning the leather with something that's damaged it :(
Not impressed so at some stage I'll be looking to get it restored

A general pic of the interior now it's better presented

And an engine bay pic, this was equally filthy but its far nicer now. When I switch the headlamps for the xenons I'll be changing a few clips and bolts that are starting to rust away

Cheers si ! But I know you get a wood on for RD's as well !

So, should I get an RD exhaust for the wagon ?!

Are you looking are the rear box or the whole system?

Theres a Alpina exhaust on ebay. I dont know if it will fit though.

Kos you got anymore pics?

Looking good Kos, you know what is really good for stripping back years of interior grime? Magic sponges.! Get em from home bargains under various brand names.

http://media.mammothcleaningsupplies.co ... 5_2247.jpg

They are also really good in stripping back the years of wax and polish on leather seats leaving them ready to reseal again.

Rear box Mo and I've already spotted that system and another on eBay. I've enquired to have the tips changed on my existing system but one place reckons it aggro and would rather do me a new back box. This means it will be louder and I'm not interested in having a loud exhaust

And here's a quick picture for you. You guys have to wait until Friday for more arty detailed pics as I'll be polishing and waxing the turd on Thursday Friday :D

Image

As for the magic sponge, I may as well just get the pro's to do it when I piss off on holiday. :D

330's like the old 328's jave a slightly fruity exhaust note from factory but a decent aftermarket system will be better for our ears I say.

You won't go wrong with an alpina system it will bolt on no dramas i'd say

supercharger kit? :)

Re:

Haha, a charger would be interesting that's for sure. Find me a set up and I'll consider it

As for the exhaust, I'll think about it. Those Alpina systems make sense as that are costing the same as a bespoke back box. All I have to do is change the exhaust tips to RD squares

I really wouldn't want it much louder than what it is now, the actuator on the flap is stuck open so it sounds quite good as it is

But I also can't be spending too much on the purple turd either
