E39 energy meter (econometer)

Noticed today, that when stopped in traffic, the needle of the econometer on my 2000 E39 528i touring, stays fully to the left, giving an inaccurate reading, unlike on my E30s, where it goes fully to the right, indicating zero miles per gallon, which is correct when you're stopped with the engine running.
Trivial in itself, but I wondered if it might be indicative of some underlying fault, or do all E39s behave like this?
Any other E39 owners out there noticed what theirs does?

is not the E39 in litres/unit length? mine was in litres per 100km thus using fuel but not moving means feul flow divide by zero, thus infinity litres per 100km when stationary.
