agreed! i'm no fan of the e36 interior, but look at the dash on that volvo! hideous beyond belief.

i can remember the alfa being a great looking car at the time, and was probably ahead of it's time when launched, but really hasnt aged very well. i do still quite like them though.

surely the 155 v6 was a closer competitor to the 328 though, both in size and price, plus i think the facelift widebody versions were out by then which handled far better than the early cars.

the piece also spoils suggestions that the e36 was a poorly recieved ugly duckling and couldnt hold a candle to the e30.

Id have the Corrado at the beginning

But if I HAD to pick one of them it would be the e36 ... although it is hideous

6.1 seconds to sixty seems a bit optimistic for a 328. but oh for the days when top gear was a proper car programme. clarkson owned one of those volvos so for once he wasn't bullshitting.

The 164 is stunning. Theres something about them and is less obvious then BMW's.



That interior

I had a 164 V6 for a few years and it was actually a well put together car and felt pretty poised through the twisties. I never felt inferior sitting next to an E34 of the same generation

My mum has a 166. It hasn't moved for nearly a year!

Funnily enough it was the ZF autobox which was the deathnail for it, plus the rear brake pipes were shot and the windscreen cracked.

That Alfa looks too much like a 405/605 to me! I would have a 155 with that lump in it though, all day long!

Think the e36 has stood the test of time the best, sure the Volvo is a sturdy bit of kit but in terms of how many e36's still run, and how relatively cheap, reliable and easy they are to motor, the 328i has got to be one of the best all rounders from that era. As long as you only ever had jockeys sat in the back!
