E30 Zone

Work may dictate a move there for a year.
How hard would it be to take my 1991 318is there for the year.

Would I pay taxes etc??

Not bothered about the shipping costs, as I would rather do that than drive a Toyota or some rubbish out there for a year

I imagine it would cost big bucks when you factor in shipping, import duties etc. Look on Trademe.nz

looked into shipping a car to america once would cost 1000 quid just the move it over in a container and what ever you would need to do once it gets there

General Tips:
1) When shipping the car, put some parts in it, you do not pay duty on the parts you bring in, they are cheaper in the UK than over in Australia so well worth preparing for.

If its going to cost anything near £16.5k you might as well drive it there.

More seriously, NZ does not have much of a car manufacturing industry, unlike Australia which does. So import is less of a problem.

If you are however only going for a year - why import it? Just use a Carnet. Have a chat with Paul Gowen at the RAC. (just google Carnet / RAC).

Oh and it is perfectly possible to drive it there, you can get to Mongolia in 3 weeks (Mongal Rally) and from there either you need to go through China (expensive and difficult) or find a way into Burma and Thailand.

It's not going to be easy. I just don't want to buy some Jap car for a year, but it looks like it will have to be.


I was willing to pay the value of the car to ship it there but as it looks like it will cost so much I will probably leave it. You never know I may find some old E21 or 2002 out there

That's the reason how I picked up the E46 Clubsport, it was his pride and joy and he wanted it to go overseas but the logistics and costs were very off putting.

Some conjecture about the weirdo car.

If your plan is to stay only ONE year in NZ, I would first of all check up with the NZ customs if you can drive a car with a UK numberplate there for that periode.

But let me say it like this, you must have a very nice and clean E30 to do a project like that. The shipping incl the return of it will cost much more than the avriage value of an E30 in the UK.

I will think if you do some "shopping around" you will be happy to find some one who can ship it one way for you for about 1500 GBP - so I will think you will get around the 3k mark only for the shipping.

I think I would take the car off the road in the UK and get a daily driver there.

If you had an E30 M30 or a Lamborgini Espada, things would look a bit diffrent.
