The e30s/e34s/e46s/e39s/e38s/e31s were the last good looking BMWs ever made.

After that it gone downhill with bangle styling/cockpits with controls which are no longer driver-centric.

Looks good to me. They've combined the weirdness of the original with elements of the new 5 Series and it's a nice evolutionary design. It does look better in a dark colour. The interior and dash are a big improvement. I'd rate it up there with the new Astra and Alfa Giulietta as an interesting design.

Bangle styled the E39 and E46. The E65 and E60 were styled under his direction, but not by him. Yes, the old stuff was nice but the original pre facelift E65 is a striking design and the 8 year old E60 looks better now than it did when new. The M Sport version is still a hench looking motor.

The old days have gone Boys, just like they have for everyone else. The stuff they make now is still top drawer - the new 5 Series is a staggeringly good car and the new 6 Series Coupe is something else. You go and drive one and tell me 'they don't make cars like they used to'.

I had a 120d Sport and now have an E90 520d M Sport. I like the new 5 but not keen on this - there's too much paint under the lights at the centre - it definitely looks wrong. I do like the way the new 5 looks but think that the GT is one of the ugliest cars in the world (apart from the Ssangyong Rodius obviously).

I'm not saying that the old 1 series and 5 series were perfect but there was something about them - very Teutonic and agressive in an ugly kind of way. The interior on the new one is dreadful as well - don't like the way you've got the 2 sweeps in from the left and the right.

Nearly went for a 1 series M Sport Coupe in Le Mans Blue with the 18" double spoke wheels but decided against it in the end. Not sure if I can say what I'm going for as it's from the wrong part of Germany maybe but BMW have mucked about with their pricing on the new 5 and so it's outside my price range now. You also get naff all on a BMW without going for options galore which is quite frustrating.

Does this mean that you start it by putting the key in the cupholder? I guess if you have 2 cups of hot coffee then it would be dangerous to drive off with them so you'd have to wait until you'd finished one before you could start the car. Very clever.

F*ck me everyone moans when BMW bring out a new design.

When the E46 came out people likened it to a Toyota Avensis FFS! Now the general consensus is that it was the last of the good looking BMW's.

I think 46's are over rated too!

Apart from leather, air con, PDC, bluetooth, cruise control, Professional radio/CD, alloys etc.....
At a shade over £28'000 (the same price as the E60 520dSE) the 520d is a bargain which is why they've already sold about 3 million.

When it came out last year, the F10 was basically cheaper than the E60 because of it's spec. About all you need is the £1500 Business Advanced Nav.

i am going to f**king moan, the front looks sh!t and the rest is midly tweeked of the old. Looks are subjective but that looks sh!t end of just like the X1.

The new 5 looks spot on imo

I'll agree with you Si, the X1 does look shite along with the X6 and yes i to think the F10 5 looks great.

The point i was making though is that people moan but then end up coming round to liking it.

For whatever reason even the SE isn't in my grade this time round when before I got an M Sport - the lease company said it was to do with pricing changes - I guess I got mine when the car was mid way through the model lifespan and that's when they want to give it a bit of a freshen up with some extra goodies.

Trev, i love the New F01 7 especially in M sport trim, i think i looks better than the F10 5 but they are very similar in styling terms and near identical in engineering terms.

I guess they have to be bold not to be like the rest of the sheep, but generaly they seem to be making some bad decisions the new 7 and the one before didnt go down too well! Nor did the 5 (e60?) when when it came out a few years back, iirc the front lights in particular went down like a lead ballon! Didn't this coincide with a head honcho in their design department?

Aside from the styling, reading between the lines it seems the build quality and materials used seem to have plateaued around 2000 give or take.

Also, some one on here picked up on their new slogan other day "Joy flows" WTF!?

lol

that is down to something called "the exposure priniciple" the more you are exposed to something the more you like it.

e.g. think of a song you hear on totp/radio/wherever the more you hear it the more you start to like it, even though first time you hear it you might not like it that much.

That analogy is wrong for me. The more i hear a song, especially one thats rinsed on the radio day in day out, i end up HATING with a passion!

It certainly is. The M6 would be the getaway car of choice if I was going into the bank job business!

No amount of exposure would stop me from wanting to carpet bomb a Scouting For Girls gig with a B17 from 30'000 feet.
Both the group and their fans in one fell swoop - result!

The E65 outsold the E38 massively, and the E60 has been the most popular 5 Series to date...and the F10 will outsell the E60. Whatever you or I think of some of the new BMW's, they're doing something right. I drove a new 6 Series recently and it is without a shadow of doubt the most outstanding thing, just about the perfect all round car. A choice between that and a full spec 330i M Sport Coupe would be a very hard one. They make a few questionable models - the X1 and X6 are big sellers and the 5GT has flopped spectacularly - but overall, BMW still make some of the best cars you can buy.

The Joy campaign has done very well too.

Surely the fact that subsequent 7 and 5 series models continue to out sell their predecessors says as much about modern society on the whole as it does about bmws ability to design ever better and more popular cars!?

bmw is no longer the prestige manufacturer they were in the years1980s when to see a BMW was a much rarer sight and a 3 series in the 1980s was a PROPER status symbol unless you were a City boy in a Guards Red 911 Turbo. They BMW seem to want to put their badge on anything these days

e.g. x1, x3, forthcoming 0 series? x6, 5 seriesGT - they want to fill every niche to gain a jump on mercedes-benz, audi.

in fact in germany bmw are not regarded as a prestige manufacturer unlike say in GB.

30 years ago BMW were a small volume maker of expensive cars, only a few of which were 'prestigious' such as the 635CSi. The others were very nice middle order cars for the reasonably well moneyed, just like they are now. BMW were in the same boat as Alfa, Lancia etc and not quite up there with MB. Audis were considered to be upmarket VW's.

BMW have filled every niche because if they don't, someone else will. If they stuck to making just 3-5-6-7 Series, they'd have been taken over years ago. The cars they make now sell in big numbers because they're very good. They've shaken off the eighties w@nk*r image as well.

There is no such thing as 'prestige' anymore. These days the more expensive the car, the bigger the tw@t behind the wheel. Astons, Range Rover, Bentleys etc now have a terrible image.

Oh, and let me assure you in Germany BMW is still seen as a prestige manufacturer and the gap between them and Mercedes has closed right up.

Let's be honest with ourselves here, most people either drive E30s because they can't afford anything more modern (although that is changing a bit now that E36s are cheaper and more plentiful) or because they like the style/handling/whatever of the E30. Either way, BMW would be mad to put a bunch of zoners in the focus groups because we're not in their target market.

It seems that you can't sell a car without satnav in it now, even though excellent standalone sat navs are cheaper, or even come free with your phone. Likewise reversing sensors/cameras, onboard TV and other stuff that no one needs in a car but everyone seems to want. Everyone who buys new cars that is. Why? I've no idea. I love a gadget as much as the next guy, I just don't want them in my car. Cars are for driving in my book - but it seems I'm in a minority. Which is cool - I get to buy old cars cheap and really enjoy them.

You can buy a new BMW without nav and reversing cameras, and to be honest the standard models have all you really need. If you're buying it on a 3 year deal where you give it back at the end, it doesn't matter. Or you can buy one that's a year old with minimal miles and get it cheaper because it doesn't have all the 'essential' crap.
I would always spec leather, nav and Xenons but that's about it.

Cars have always been consumer goods. Even the 'best made' stuff like E34's etc all end up in the scrapyard after the usual 12 years. E39's took longer to end up there and the earliest E60's (now 8 years old) are a long way off crossing the Bridge of doom en masse.
One thing I've noticed is that the Bangle era stuff such as the E65 is taking a lot longer to depreciate. You take a nice 2001 E38 and try and get 3 grand for it.....good luck.

At 5 grand, you'll have a queue of buyers for a decent E65 745i. Even the earliest, shittest spec E60 520i is still a 7 grand car with decent mileage.
