As per title really, I want a big 7 series sport, the 728 seems the sensible choice, but it is the same insurance and mpg (£640, 25mpg) as the 735i v8.
Will the v8 enevitably be more expensive to run? I would hope to find one with sports seats and lpg.

go for the 735i, 728i is underpowerd in my opinoin, we have 735i sport in the family, and its a beautiful car, yes you wil put a bit of extra fuel in it at the end of the week comparing to the 728i, but if it were my choice it would be worth that extra £10 - £15 in fuel. also the 728i isnt that economical in the first place, plus more chance of finding a v8 with lpg.

if you go for V8, you may as well go for the 740i
same mpg, better performance

Tax will be the same for most of them until 2001. MPG will be the same. Insurance is higher I guess.

I had S plate 728 at the start of last year and cost nearly £100 to fill up then - got knows what'll be now
If you're getting one first make sure you've got plenty of money in the bank then go for the V8, the 728 is pretty quick off the mark but soon runs out of puff !

Think is there designed to do long distances hence the big tank. Dont really see it as a problem. It means less times filling up.

the 728ifuel tank is also unique
the 735/740 tanks are interchangeable and you have better chance of finding one if you ever have leaking tank. a 728i fuel tank is about 800 quid

my 1999 740 cost the same to tax as my 325 E30. they go through a lot of fuel but are surprisingly rapid when doing so. as well as rusting out the tanks can implode due to a fault in the tank ventilation system. older ones are going to be a challenge to keep good and expect to replace a lot of suspension, they eat wishbones and ball joints. all easy enough stuff if your handy with spanners.
