E39 issue...

Hoping someone can help or provide some info/give some advice.

E39 528i Sport (2000 W). Starts up and drives fine in the morning. Come lunch time, the car starts up but hesitates, when putting foot down there is no pick-up, it feels dead? It doesn't do this in the morning?

Have changed the Air Mass Sensor thingy with a new one from BMW (£200) but has not made any difference.

Any ideas on what else to check?

TIA

Read the codes before changing things?

Might be a cam sensor, but I really would get the codes read. Being an e39, you'll have to sift through hundreds if it hasn't been read in a while.

The diagnostics is almost too clever for its own good.

Most likely a failing cam sensor or an air leak on the intake side but as said, get the fault memory read first.

Diagnostics has been done, mates car not mine. Came up with air mass sensor faulty so he's changed that but still no improvement :?

Were the adaptions reset after the mass sensor was replaced?

Was it a genuine BMW, OE quality or chineese mass?

Also check for air leaks.

This sort of thing has happened twice on my 528. Car would start fine when cold, then when it got up to temp would go sluggish and stall sometimes, was the crank sensor both times.(two separate engines) Hope this helps

Managed to get it back on the diagnostic's, turned out to be the 'Inlet Camshaft Sensor' and 2 of the inlet pipes.

Thanks for the help :thumb:

Who needs a fault code reader when Barry is around.
