I would rather do it in your E34.

A compact will return an easy 35-40mpg on a run.

I think with that drive you'll get around 35, as long as you're not hooning it everywhere. I think it's a good choice, but I'd rather have an E36 318is coupe personally.

I was going to buy a 318ti compact. But coming from a e36 coupe the interior just seemed a bit cheap. Which I think was a comment made by the Auto press when it was new.
How ever I do like the practical side of it.. which is why I wanted one. And I don't think they look that bad.

mine would do an easy 40mpg on a run, and barely sip fuel pottering around town. however, it was only a 316 so for most of my b-road commute it needed to be thrashed and averaged 35mpg or so, but i got fedup with the lack of power.
i should imagine the 318ti would give similar if not better economy and also have a bit of poke when you need it.
i actually prefer the way the compacts feel and handle, they have a certain amount of e30 nimbleness which was lost with the normal e36s complex and sure footed rear end. the dash looks pretty low rent, but it's still nicely put together and a lot more practical then the normal e36 dash. definately needs to be black though, the lighter colour dashboards are disgusting!

I weighed my E30 325i @ 1242kg,
I weighed my compact 318ti sport @ 1240kg (weighed 1260kg with an M52 in it)
MPG with the 1.8 i was getting low 30's mixed driving

Tbh I know they're pretty similar weight wise, but my compact always felt lighter than my e30, maybe because the major controlls are a bit lighter and the steering on them is quicker. The e36 also felt like a far stiffer shell.

Compacts are great, bastard child yes and flawed but I honestly love mine.
bought as a hack and she's stuck longer than most cars
does average 37 mpg weekly commuting, can get 45 outa her if I nurse and draft a bit lol !
drive one, see what you think only massive drawback..... they are gash in the snow !
M44 best donk, with a working SACS of course.

Agreed Ant, i bought mine as a short termer when I sold my 328i sport, 2 years on and 25k miles later its still here. Also all its ever needed is oil changes and tires.
I love mine but will be selling it shortly when the m50 touring is complete and no doubt I will regret it.
Heres a nice example to prove that compacts can look good.#

I have a e36 touring 1600 and a e36 compact m42 1800 road rally car.
My touring does 400 miles per full tank, i recon it would do loads more on a long run, but the 400 miles is back and too from work.
My compact, i filled it up, drove to st asif, thats about 50 miles from me and where the road rally Gogledd started, did half the rally, put £10 in it , did the second half, so thats 140 miles of flat out motorsport, and then drove home and had 1/4 a tank of fuel left. Finished 22nd overall, and first novice to produce BMW glory ;)
Compacts handle better than e36 in the wet, and like with most cars, yo pich your wheels and that makes the look of the car...
COmpacts are the Rallying future!
