Can't say I've owned one. But my dad has.

Was an 840ci. Was a nice cruiser but can't remember it being mind blowingly fast. And wasn't that reliable TBH.

Can't really remember much else, I liked the car though.

Nice cars and to me the best shaped BMW, but the people i know who have owned them have said you need a big wallet to run one :(

^When things go wrong (electrics, suspension) = ££££

Although they can be picked up on the cheap now, they are still cars with proper premium running costs.

840Ci is the pick of the bunch.

aaah what a shame... so they're a costly fix when they break and i bet they're incredibly thirsty on fuel as well.

I had an 850 CSI, with a 5.6ltr V12 under the hood its hard not to smile everytime you hit the throttle and under the E30 M3 it has to be the best BMW i have ever owned. the 840's are a bit slower off the mark and not quite the same as the 850's if you drive the 850 you'll want one.....bit like a barge when it takes off but fun the windows shut automatically when you hit 100mph and good for well over 150mph unless you get a restricted model (in germany !!... wouldnt do that over here......).. but to be honest who needs to go that fast...they also handle really well for a big car, check out www.e31.net..this site will tell you everything you need to know about the 8 series...
VERY juicy and stupidly expensive if something bad goes wrong...(e.g. steering box will set you back £3500 fitted from BMW, susspension £2500 etc)
but you get a lot of attention especially from people who dont know what it is....picture of my old one bellow.

they used the 850 engine in the McLaren F1 (shame they never released this bad boy....the M8 looked the nuts....

that m8 looks evil... and very "arnie in running man" :)

its a shame you need to donate a kidney to research to keep these cars on the road, they look brilliant!

The 850 engine wasn't used in the McClaren to be fair, it was the block. It's like saying the 318i is the same engine as the S14 ;)

The 850 is 2 M20B25s, so a fantastic noise is guaranteed but it was never going to get near the 600 F1 horses in standard form,

I had an 850 for a few years, the road presence is great. They are the best looking coupe that bmw has ever made. I only did around 2 thousand in the 4 years i had it. The longest trip was to everett's house.

The trade up is shite performance and economy. A pure second car if you have the space.

considering the price of these now wouldnt the best bet be an 840 and a charger kit for a nice 400 hp?
