I have just changed the rocker gasket on E36 316i, and now, every time I turn the engine off it weeps quite badly. Is there supposed to be a sealant on the gasket too? If so what sealant should I use?

I would use a sealant, only on the curved parts of the cover though.
The studs have a collar on them, in fairness they really shouldn't tighten down much, they hit the collar when tightening by hand and you just nip them up after that. I would be getting a new gasket and hoping for the best.
Edit: I've just checked the torque rating, they should be 10nm. Not a lot at all.
