???????????
There is a huge difference between an e39 m5 and a 528!
If your worried about 15mpg from an e30 the m5 will kill you and not just on fuel bills!

True what a way to go
(A blaze of atomised fuel VW MAFs, expired warranties and vanos gubbins the most likely)

A good E39 a great thing, a bad one is a total money pit. 540i manual touring gave us 24mpg over 10k miles. Urban trips are pricy though. It was a lovely car but I think we were lucky to pick one up for £8k that ran so well.

would hope not... i,ve had police blues and two's training when i drove for the bomb disposal..and the preston police course when i was a PMS driver...( preston being the most advanced police course they do..)
ive had scoobys, bikes, you name it....if you ever see my car looking like its been driven by a car thief....IT IS lol

..... the E30 is costing a fortune in fuel..tried a service but still about 15 mpg

Unless you're at full throttle everywhere, there's something wrong with your E30. Post up in the tech section and see what comes out. I'd recommend changing the blue temp sensor which gives the ECU the temperature information it uses for fuelling as a starter for 10.....

As above. 15mpg from a 325 is just wrong, unless your hooning around like a loon. Theres something wrong with it. If you do the same to an M5, it'll return less. In fact if you did the same to a 528, it would give you much more. Thought about a diesel?

I had a 1998 E39 528i SE Auto for three years. Bought it 2004 with 119000 miles and FSH. It was the most hassle free car I've ever owned, totally without fault during my ownership. They are superb value for money.

It could take some time to conceive that way!! Anyway to answer your question, I have owned many E39s and IMHO if you get a good one they are one of the best cars on the road. They are certainly fantastic value for money at the moment and I can recommend the 530 sport or even the 530d Sport if you can stretch to one. My first E39 however was a 1998 528i SE. When I got it it was on standard 16" alloys and it had just had all new ( budget ) tyres fitted. I wanted to upgrade the wheels and tyres because the standard ones just looked to small but as I was driving 1200 miles a week at the time I thought I would get some use out of the new tyres. Anyway towards the end of my second week of ownership I was going down a sightly damp twisty country road when the road went sharply to the right. The car just ploughed straight on narrowly missing two trees and I ended up facing backwards in the field. Unhurt I managed to get the car back on the road and started to assess the damage. Luckily the damage was minimal, it had just pushed the sill in so I was able to drive it home. That very weekend I bought some 18" wheels for it and fitted Yokahama tyres and the handling was transformed. I did about 50K miles in that car and apart from regular servicing and a new set of tyres the car never needed anything. Since then I have had a number of sports including the diesel sport and if you have always ruled out diesels you need to think again. I have even thought anout putting a 530d engine into an E30. It would probably make it as fast as an M3 and still return 40mpg. The extra weight would be tricky on the handling though and that is what I like most about the E30 so it will probably never happen lol

Mines a 525tds and its a good family wagon.
The 2 No that your interested in, arn't going to help your fuel economy.
A bad E39 can cost you in the pocket. They arn't cheap to fix.

I had 2 e34s over 8 years. All it cost me other than servicing was one door locking actautor, a transmission cooler and a water pump.
Had a 3 year old '00 e39 for 2 years and it needed 2 abs sensors, the airbag light resetting twice, a themostat (they break the plastic clips that hold them shut), 2 new rims (constantly buckling style 49's), a new headlight (again the plastic adjustirs just broke up), Numerous suspension links / arm / joints, New dash under warrany due to pixels out and a transmission cooler. I think thats all

all on tp of BMW servicing remember. Everytime it went in I got a list of work which IF I'd paid BMW to complete, would have bankrupted me.
The thing drove me mad. The quality was blatently not there. So I outed it in favour of a company car. However, 3 years in a deisel Arstra? Can't wait to get in another e39 although I won't spend anywhere near what i did last time and therefore the niggly faults can be forgiven more.

The M5 is a totally different animal, you just can't compare this to a 528 or any other e39...
I've very recently sold an e39 530i Sport.. fantastic car in it's own right..
Like I said I sold it and went back to an e36 328 Sport.. Again they're galaxies apart..
I managed 36ish MPG over a 2500 mile trip through Europe in the 5er, if I was lucky I'd get 18/20 mpg round town. In comparison I'm getting 30ish out of my 328 round town.. but even more smiles to the gallon.

I'm really quite tempted by a 530 sport in a few years time when they are at the bottom of their value threshold. But even more tempted by a late e34 or an early e39 540 touring, but has to be manual. Sadly there is one less on the road than last year huh morat.

Silly frigging woman.

Then lpg it and enjoy luxury cruising without it costing a total fortune.

Agreed.
Bought mine at 30 months old with 90000 on the clock. Added another 135000 in 5 years and it's still going strong.
Until 215000 miles it had nothing but servicing and consumeables.

If you find a 540i 6speed Touring, you'll have to move fast or I'll be there first! Rumour has it they made about 70 in RHD....
It was the perfect car for a dual petrol head family with dogs. We still miss it

I've had 2 E39's and both 523's (manual and auto) - both have been really nice to drive, plenty of power and quite economical - but I wouldn't buy another !
To many sensors, to many bits to go wrong, both have cost me a small fortune and I'd rather stick to an E30, E32, E34 any day (more so the E30

)
They do look nice but unless you get a gud 'un then make sure you've got plenty of dosh in the bank
