i just imported a 91 e34 525i sport into ireland , does anyone know how much they will charge me for vrt ie import tax to get my irish plate. is there anyone whose vrt'd one or heard how much it is? i know theyl rip me off but i want to know how badly

Thought it was supposed to be market value, so if you have a reciept and its questioned and the previous owner is happy to declare the value you will pay a percentage of that, other wise the authorities that be will decide a value based upon recent sales and current condition.

I think theres only a dispute if the car is rare and not listed on the database (or the database value of the car is wildly off), then the VRT office create an open market selling price (OMSP) for the car, and calculate VRT as a percentage of that, 22.5 , 25, or 30 % depending on engine size. They can get snotty with some cars, often a genuine receipt from a UK seller isn;t considered representative of Irish OMSP, but I doubt an E34 sport will be a problem

Last time I was talking to a BMW/Porsche independent specialist here in Ireland, he had a Porsche 911 993 turbo in for a service, reg was 1993, had come in from UK, unbelievably clean car. the couple that bought it had paid 20k sterling for it, then had to pay 20k euro for VRT. Irish OMSP was somehow 80 grand euro. talk about getting screwed.

VRT should be in and around 740 euro IIRC.

My brother in law imported my E30 325i sport 2 years ago and it cost him around 1900 euro VRT. His tax at the time was about 600 euro but his last price for tax last year was 980 euro a year. He decided it was too much and put the car up for sale. Bad news for him, good news for me.So i bought it and brought it back into the UK where it cost nothing to re-register 50 quid for an MOT and 185 pound for tax for the year. Ireland is a rip off for tax and VRT so i would say your going to have to shell out quite a bit. I think VRT works out at 33% of their valuation of your car. Sorry Pal

The reason the value is so high for vrt is that the simi (which is the Irish motor industry body) sets the values of the cars so it suits them to make it expensive so that imports are kept down its a total scam

Is this a stupid idea or can you just leave it on english plates if you knew someone who would let you use their address in England and tax and insure it from that address.

If the same cop spots you around in it a few times or the customs spot you they can seize the car and impound it and you'll pay a nice fine and have to pay the VRT before it's returned.

Technically you have 24 hours to pay the Vehicle Registration Tax once you bring it from the Uk to Ireland.
