A mate is getting me involved in the restoration of his E28 525i, ive just about got it in his head that fitting any engine less than a 3.5 M30 is a waste of time :)
What I need to know is would the E34 M30 be a better choise? Younger engine etc, I know the M30 converters favour these for the E30, is it because of mounting points? Wiring loom?

Any help would be appreciated 8)

It is mainly due to the shape of the sump and oil pick-up pipe - the E28 M30 is the wrong shape for the E30 cross-member.

The E28 also has it's crank sensor in the top of gearbox and the E34 one is on the front on the timing cover.

One or more of the cooling / heater hoses are different as well.

I think these problems can be overcome but it's not worth the hassle when the correct engine for the application is cheaply available still.

I reckon he'll be better off with an E28 M30 engine.

Or going out and buying an E28 M535i ! winkeye

Don't they also have smaller valves or ports or something though that makes the early and late ones near enough the same power ?

I could be wrong, but I thought E28 and E34 (non cat) 535i were both rated at around 217 bhp.

I believe the E28 M30 lump is rated at 218BHP and all E34 lumps 211BHP due to changes to allow for running on un- leaded fuel when the E34 was introduced back in 1988...16 years later mine kicks out 206BHP so not too bad a loss over the years..
