Do you know if it's a TD or a TDS?

If it's an M51 then hot starting can be troublesome, esp. if servicing hasn't been kept up to date. And the aux. belt tensioner has a habit of snapping off....

What happened to getting an E30 M3 Convertible????

If it's cheap enough (£1000), just buy it. As long as it drives straight and isn't 3 cars welded together I wouldn't worry too much. It won't be a Cat B - Cat B's all have the V5's sent back to DVLA and even if you had the V5 you can't tax it.
Cat B is break only - Cat A is crush. Cat C is repairable but with 'damaged repaired' marker on V5, Cat D is repairable/no V5 marker.
