I have just bought a E34 525i 12v auto 1990 and got a couple of issues.
1. Fuel pump, how expensive and how easy to change? Mine is whining and there is a smell of petrol around the OSR wheel. I don't mind getting new pump but my mechanical skill is limited.
2. Steering shudder. The steering shudders when going around 70ish tracking? or something more sinister? And how often to cam belts need changing? Any help appreciated.

RE; fuel pump

its located in the boot on the right hand side. youll need to lift the cloth trim and you'll see a sort of egg shaped 'plate' with 7 screws holding in down. undo those and lift away the plate. to take out the pump, i use a big flat head and a small hammer, and slowly loosen the whitish ring (anti-clockwise of course) to lift out the fuel pump. pumps are around £100 new but i have one if you want it.

no mate i changed mine not long ago. all you do is once you have undone the whitish ring you will see 2 pipes and a electrical plug. take off plug and make a note of the pipes positions. the pump is held in place with clips which you will see., you can push these together and lift out the pump. i reccomend using a torch so you can see better.

Madman!!

Re: the belt, probably 4 years, or 40k miles, whichever comes sooner is a safe bet.

The shimmy is almost certainly front control arm bushes.
May as well replace all the bushes with a set of poly ones when you are doing it. Not the easiest job, but, it does wonders for steering, handling and tyre wear.
