No servicing required in normal use. There is a filter in the gas line to the injectors, but I've never changed one in close to twenty years of LPG motoring.
The only exception is if you accidentally fill with contaminated gas. Commercial propane contains a small amount of a tar like substance, known as 'heavy ends', in the same way that petrol contains water. Like the water, the heavy ends should remain in the suppliers tank, but very occasionally some can end up in your car tank, and block the filter.
I suppose that every couple of years you should probably get the system checked over professionally, if you don't have the knowledge to do it yourself, but I have ebay diagnostic software which connects to my laptop, and will confirm all is working as it should.

Who said V8's dont do the milage?

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/262852859015?ul_noapp=true

Im driving about in a borrowed E38 728i at the moment and as much as its a really nice car the MPG is ridiculous, why fit an engine that cant pull the barge? My 540 does better MPG, im rapidly beginning to hate it, at least a V8 puts a smile on your face!

Wow that has done some leg!

Non vanos engine though and they seem to be less prone to chain guide problems.

4 years of X5 ownership for my dad

Late 2005 3.0d Sport
Full dealer history up to 65,000 and some independent garages oil series there after

got it with 95,000 miles
its now in 129,000 miles

the pros
it drives like a car, lots of useable power, solid feel to it. You can throw them about to a point.

the cons
crap MPG but what do you expect. averages 25mpg around the houses with an occasional long run.

the issues

loom in passenger door faulty resulting in dood deal locking itself permanently ! Had to take rear door off and cut the striker off to get the front door off.
There was break in the loom within the door

drop in power, faulty vacuum tank
2 starter motors (1st replacement was a recon unit from ECP and lasted 13 months)
All front bushes replaced
Dash buttons fall off (you have to buy a full set for over £100)
Heater vent actuator failed

Transfer case, this is a recent one. still faulty but the car has just been PX'd after the fault re set. Lets just hope it holds out for another couple of weeks until the new car arrives

Rear bushes will need doing soon as well

the car has pissed my dad off due to a few of the above issues. But his previous car was a land cruised and in 12 years all that needed was some bushes, exhaust and 2 res shocks and electric window switch pack

the cars are at an age now where things WILL go wrong

full history is essential and there are plenty to choose from.
like Mr Jesus, says they are a good car with a bad rep. i really did like it but you need to keep on top of it

one thing that makes a real difference to them is the tyres that go on it. it was in Pirellis on the front and 2 budgets on the back (the dealer selling fitted them) when we got it, lived with them for 2 months and fucked them off and fitted fitted 2 matching Pirellis on the rear.
when they needed changing we switched to Michelin and the car drove a LOT better

X5s DO NOT DRIVE LIKE CARS. Why do people say this?! None of them do i've got sadly a 13 plate 3.0d X3 on our drive and its a fucking 2 ton tractor it couldn't be any less car driving like if it tried. Current X car still in production and the X5s are bigger and half and even heavier

The original X3 is proper shit, the F25 shape not so* bad - they're the same size as an e53 X5. Trust me i'm not happy about it for lots of reasons tainting our driveway. Its only redeeming feature that is the 400lbs of torque they make

yup them aswell, in fact the difference is even more on a normal car like a 318i or 320d

My T5 transporter feels lighter and more wieldy than an X5!

Still got an eye out for one of these - having seen a few I'm wondering if a decent one is ambitious on our budget!!!

Viewed one today, (trader, so overpriced to cover his bs!!!) - mot history shows a minor oil leak from the back of the engine as an advisory and the car did look fairly oily underneath, though only a couple of drops where it was parked. Trader obviously said its normal, they're all wet underneath.
I've seen online the oil filter housing is a fairly common leak - just wondered if oil leaks are fairly standard on these (3.0 petrol)???

Yes, oil filter housing to block seal which £5 and a couple of hours to replace and clean up the mess.

Cam cover gasket is also another common oil leak on these.
