It's certainly no bed of roses in the motor trade but its pretty good for me at the moment tbh! :)

While we are on be subject, ML are looking for another two technicians which obviously must have BMW experience.

So the car arrived yesterday at ML filthy dirty and looking very sorry for itself. Note the offensive scorpion DTM pipes!

So a quick scout round it revealed a couple of pleasant surprises

An unused spare complete with period Michelin MXX 2 tyre.

Image

And popping the tool kit open revealed the holy grail of BMW tool box items!

Image

Still some bits missing though but easily enough to source.

Image

And the mill itself! I'm gagging to strip this down to find out the extent of the damage but it may not be for a couple of weeks due to a heavy work load.

Curiosity is getting the better of me so i started to strip the engine to remove the head and see what i'm up against and if i'm going to need a head or not. Unfortunately we don't have a head in our parts dept at ML as first thought, just the rest of the engine such as the block, crank, cam carrier, inlet etc.

On closer inspection it appears to be very original and in good shape which is indicative of the mileage and at a guess, has been garaged most of its life as the block is still black'ish, the core plugs aren't rusty, most of the fittings still showing their passivated finish and all the fittings are original. Plenty of the cosmoline type wax coating everywhere.

Image

Image

Image

On closer inspection it looks like coolant has breached the head gasket line so i'm not holding out much hope for the head itself.

Image

Image

The possible culprit?

Image

Image

Removal of the cam cover was pleasing to say the least but then it's what i would expect with a car of this mileage and regular oil changes.

Thats lovely Barry.

Just needs some turbines and it would be perfect. And a running engine of course!

I bet that head will go again with a cut'n'blow dry. These were made from proper materials unlike modern rubbish. You doing a full rebuild or just a top end? May as well go the whole way really.

Been doing a Mercedes C180 K timing chain today - the air still has a blue tint three hours after I locked the doors! What a bastard of a job they are.

Thanks guys!

Andy, we will have to see how bad it really is but if it will go again i will be most happy but i'm not holding my breath.

So i had a bit of spare time and got the throttle bodies off and loom out of the way.

Image

And while doing this i found this,

Image

Which is part number 16

Image

Which goes here, from the radiator top hose onto the cylinder head.

Image

Again this may be part of or the sole reason for the coolant loss. The pipe not only appears to have this odd hole in it but is also distorted from heat.

Looking good Bazza,

Hope you have a nice array of 9mm snap on tools! The manifold is by far the worst part of the job.

i reckon spanners and maybe a half moon one will be helpful.

Crouch reckons it can take a day to get the exhaust manifolds off these cars!!

Admittedly it's not nice down there but it's not that bad.

Don't worry i will pal. It will be a walk in the park compared to say a pair of turbo's on an E9x 335i and that's doable in a day, just.

I doubt Crouch meant literally a whole day to remove it an S38 exhaust manifold.

It took me over half a day to get an M42 318iS E36 manifold off recently. Four rusted nuts that would not play ball, ended up removing the steering column coupling/shaft to gain access for hammer and chisel to split the nuts. Normally, it's an hours work to get one off.
So a day to get a grim S38 manifold off = entirely possible.
