No Douvrin here Peter - that was the Renault 20 lump later used in the Citroen CX.

But you're on the money. I suspect M025365636515626's legal whizzkid actually is the office boy/photocopier bitch at a Citizens Advice Bureau in Weston Super Mare. Looking to upgrade from a 51 plate Daewoo Lanos.

The Douvrin was in the 260 Volvos.

I don't think it was in the Renault 20, though - was it not just the 25 and 30?

Damn it!

I knew it was too good to be true - Andy wrong.

The Douvrin was the four cylinder.

What everybody *calls* the Douvrin was the V6 - actually called the "PRV V6".

The Douvrin was the four cylinder 2 litre used in the Renault 18 and 20, and later the 25 and Espace as a 2.2. It never went into a Volvo - the 2 litre Vovo engine was their own design. You're thinking of the PRV V6, Renault 25 and 30, Pug 604 and Volvo 264, 265 and 760.
The PRV (Peugeot Renault Volvo) was made in the Douvrin factory but it's not the Douvrin engine.

The Renault 20 version went into the CX in the late seventies to replace the old DS based engine.

I think his whole family is BMW Biased. My Mate is getting his second X6 35D Xdrive (i believe thats what its called), his uncle has an X5 and an R8 V8, he currently has a 320 Convertible (Audi TT 225 before that) and now thinking E92 M3 Coupe, personally i would go with a 335d coupe, cheaper than the M3, cheaper to run, insure and plenty quick enough. Really wants something that looks good and can be quick if he needed it. Its mainly status symbol really.

He wants something that is not too flash but in keeping with his position as a partner in the firm, leaving space to get something flashy when he becomes an equity partner. The majority partner has an Audi RS6 Avant.

This is just some bloke you met in the psychiatrist's waiting room isn't it?

What is the point of a salaried partnership? Except for the equity partners. It's just somebody to share the liabilities, but not the profits. If he's 26, he's two years PQ, and he's blowing the equivalent of about a year's salary on a flash car. Just so you can feel good about yourself by being his "mate". It's more attention seeking bollocks.

He's asking your advice because you're so knowledgeable that you turned down a £15000 car for £2000 - surely he'd be better asking somebody like StevieBMW or Burtocain?

Merc E350 CDi Coupe

My brother in law has one - 40mpg and goes like a fookin missile - credible alternative to a 6 Series.

Quite flash though :o:

Haha! Gotcha!

The Douvrin engine was very good, quite powerful and utterly unbreakable. The PRV V6 was horrid though. They were a V8 with 2 pots chopped off and they never ran 'right'. The 2.8 version in the early Volvo 264 with the carbs was a real lemon. 18 mpg if you were lucky and it wouldn't pull a greased stick out of a Dog's arse.

He mentioned E92 M3 so i posted in Other BMW asking for other peoples opinions as i know 1 person who got the 335 coupe and his mate got the M3 and the M3 owner wished he got the 335 as the performance difference between the two on the road is not much (in their opinion) and he would have saved quite a bit of money.

Plus asking advice due to me currenlty owning a 2dr E30 and being a previous porsche owner i am stuck between the 2, i know which car i would rather buy with my own money, however asking for a opinion from a wider audience, big mistake that was.

Why don't certain people on here make constructive comments to help other zoners, rather that wasting their time putting up stupid posts??????

Your mate (if he exists) is clearly 1000 times cleverer than you. He doesn't need your help, and you thus don't need ours.

He doesn't he asked me about it not so long ago, i told him but he still took it into the garage for an oil topup and washer fluid topup. Cost him £45.00 instead of about £15-£20 doing it himself.

Dunno. They are old cars now, most with at least 50'000 miles. Three years and 60k extra on the clock would result in a high mileage, stonechipped example that isn't worth a lot.

There is only one way of depreciation proof motoring and that's to buy a car which is perfectly okay, but worth fuck all and run it until it's completely knackered......spending no money on it apart from servicing. That's what I've done for the last 5-6 years.

He's probably more likely to crash the M3 as he wouldnt be able to handle the power and he would look for someone to blame as he works feeding off the blame culture society. He would probably even blame his friend for recommending the car.

Eh ?

How is driving a car which is serviced regularly being a cheapskate and driving a deathtrap ?

My old man drives a 54 plate focus he's had from 6 months old - it is serviced every 12 months without fail in accordance with manufacturers specifications. On the very rare occasions when something has gone wrong with it it gets repaired.

It still looks and drives like new.

He doesnt spend anything else on it other than servicing because it doesnt need it.

Cheapskate ? No - that would be not servicing it at all
Deathtrap/wreck ? Most definately not.

Going from his general attitude he buys the cheapest thing possible and drives it regardless of whether its safe or not, just because a car has an MOT doesn't mean its a safe car. MOT standards are pretty low.

You are a little wide of the mark :P

Andy does know a little bit about cars - particularly BMW's :D

And it depends where you go for an MOT how tough it is - my local place are very picky but fair and I wouldnt have it any other way.

Yes i have an old swift, but its totally solid, in pretty good nick and reliable (one of the better older swifts around, got it from a classic car restorer who took it in px), i have a 316i M10 (yes its a LHD Import but they were designed as LHD at the end of the day) which has been in the family for the last 22 years and has come into my ownership for restoration and eventual daily driver status and a 5 month old Honda Civic.

Most people would have fragged the E30 i have due to its condition but i am restoring it as it has potential, take some hard work but it will be done right and be nice once i have finished.

The MOT place i use go by the book, pass or fail, simple. They don't look for things they can fail it on or minors so they can get extra work, any minors that are found are prompty sorted as an absolute minimum.

Certain people seem to slag off other zoners comments for no real reason, what one person does may not be to everyones elses taste or decisions they make may not be to everyones taste but why slag them off, take the piss or make totally pointless comments?????? I don't get it, its not clever, funny or even mildly ammusing, its actually rather pathetic that those certain people are that narrow minded and can't actually come up with anything remotely constructive to say. Some comments i have seen on here, i could have got a better answer from my 3 year old or a mokey in a zoo.. Shame really as there are some really nice people on here who provide lots of help and information and those who don't. I guess its all about mentallity, intellect and respect for other people, or in certain cases a distinct lack off all 3, its a shame really and rather disapointing. :(

You've pretty much described yourself to a tee there old Chap.

All you seem to do is post about your mates, what they want to buy, how rich they are, how they could have sold you a 20 grand car for 50p, how successful you used to be blah blah blah.

The silly story about the 540i marked you down I'm afraid.

However, you have provided a lot of amusement and certain Zone gold and for this, I thank you.
