Hi,

I know it is not a strict E30 question, but need some advice.

I need an economic run around car. Needs to be an estate (touring) and I will mainly be doing long distance motorway driving.

I would get an E30, but need something more economic and I currently don't have the time to do a diesel engine swap. (A 335d engine would be very nice...).

So what other BMWs can people recommend. Ideally should be cheap to buy and have a good economy.

Cheers

E34 touring on LPG. It will be a much better motorway car then a E30.

Would consider E36, is the 318tds the best one to get then? What mpg do you get?

E30 325i on LPG would be an option, but currently haven't got time to do a project. Need a simple run-about with minimum effort . And a good used one will be a bit pricey.

Any more suggestions?

If your after something cheap ... Dare I say a Peugeot 306 HDI estate? You could get a tidy one for the price of a e34 or e36 nail.

e36 318i touring will do high 30's on the m-way and 30 aroud town. Saying that a 328i touring will do 35 on a run

they're comfy and cheap

forget the 318 diesel they're a road block literally. 90bhp when they were new, your better off with a 316/8i imo no expensive diesel pumps or turbos to sh!t themelves in old age

Have you actually driven one of these sorry turds? I guess not. In standard guise they're so slow to the the point of being unsafe. The high price of diesel in the UK makes them utterly pointless.

I'd take a nice E36 318i touring. Bulletproof engine, reasonably torquey and will average 35mpg all day long. Not quick, but an excellent daily driver and infinitely preferable to a sorry 318tds sloth-mobile. 0-60 in 15 seconds? No thanks.

Get an e34 touring in a diesel if you must. I love e30 tourings but they are not in the same league as the e34 for motorway cruising.

What mileage do you get out of a E34?

Also what money could I get an E46 for?

I know a well maintained e34 diesel is good for around 50mpg and the V8's are very thirsty but fast. My e34 touring has done just over 400 miles on a tank since ive had it which i think is good but its a m30 3.5 conversion.

And i think you can get a good e46 touring for way below 2k but dont quote me on that :D
