Grind the lip away slightly leaving about 1 or 2mm
I never needed any arch mods with my ol;d 17's, they were 205's though

i must confess
i was guilty of a little diy mself once not to unlike the rolling pin you describe
it actually did the job fine
what i did was got a piece of wood that was round perhaps slighter thinner than ur average rolling ping put about 2 1/2 times the length.
first i cleaned and anti rust treated the inside of the lip
then i filled it up with a lick of p40 i think or something like that
before the compund set i put the piece of wood over the tyre between the arch and the tyre and appled pressure in a sort of see saw sort of angle whilst slightly rolling the wood forward and back
when i was happy i had bent the metal back far enough i stopped and cleaned of the compund that had been squeezed out and let it set.
the arches are still solid on that car
so it worked for me
There are ALOT of reasons why you shouldnt do it this way though so i cant say i reccomend it only i felt it was fine for me.

obviously worth noting either too much or too little heat will cause paint cracking
there was a guide on either mateymatey.com or one of the vw sites on how to make a arch rollign tool using a jack
