Hammerite Under Body Seal ???

Hi guys,

The underneath of my old turd is in ok condition for the age. I have a few minor rust spots here and there however i have been looking into applying some sort of protection which will help prevent rust.

Has anybody tried this and if so is it any good?

http://www.eurocarparts.com/ecp/p/car-a ... car-mainte

Do you recommend anything else. I plan to on one weekend jack her on all for stands and then brush it down with a medium to hard brush.

wipe down with a ever so slight damp cloth to take off excess dirt dust and rust.

Then spray on this under-seal wax oil. The weather is finally on my side and its sunny and beautiful.

Please help me into the right direction.

Regards
John -m42

The link just goes to the eurocarparts homepage mate! Don't buy the underseal, underseal overtime scabs allowing water under the coating and trapping it in therefore harbouring rust. I always use Hammerite Original Waxoyl - others use something like Dinitrol.

The previous owner always used original waxoyl, coating twice a year. There's not a patch of rust on the underside of mine!

Hi thanks for the input.

I was looking at this product: http://www.eurocarparts.com/ecp/p/car-a ... &0&cc5_716

hopefully this should work.

The Hammerite Original Waxoyl you use - is this a spray in a can form or is it a tub and paste form ?

Don't bother with the underseal type you have linked to, it isn't any good.

Here's a link to the type I use - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/HAMMERITE-WAX ... 25802d0287

It comes in a schutz can, so you'll need a schutz gun to connect to a compressor. All you do is place the can in a bowl of hot water for 10 mins and then spray away, I can get a real good even coat with it.

Also check out http://www.bilthamber.com/
Quite a few of my friends from a mini club have used their products, a bit more costly but they swear buy it

Cheers bud.

I appreciate the help. With the schutz can, gun and then connecting it to a compressor althought i wish i had all this but i dont. I have never used a compressor before or with a gun atached to spray.

is this the only way of using this product or do they also come in your regular spray cans to which i can spray and apply without the use of spray guns and compressosrs?

I couldnt seem to find one which is just your traditional spray can method as im sure this would also do the trick.

With the schutz cans, you can buy it in aerosol cans but they are expensive in comparison to the schutz cans - http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stor ... yId_165594

You can also buy a manual pressure pump spray that can be used with the schutz cans, but they tend to be of poor quality but here's a link to one of them - http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stor ... yId_165614

Search for them elsewhere though, you'll be able to find them cheaper than halfords!

Now, that's dedication! 8O

I try to do mine every 2 years or so, which seems to work well enough - my 1970 Turd has lasted 43 years and 150,000+ miles so far...

Haha! Well that's what he said winkeye
But from the condition of my car it could be true!

Might be in contact soon with you speedtouch about your chips, tempted with the 325i mild chip

All good advise above.

If it was me I would:

1)Power wash it, clean off any loose underseal then let it dry off for a few days.

2)Wire brush any rust area's

3)Rust treat

4)Etch primer

5)Zinc primer

6)Rattle can of decent quality

7)Waxoyl it

I used the waxoyl pressure sprayer and extension tube. You need to get the waxoyl HOT to get it to work effectively. I put the tin in a bucket of almost boiling water and it works well until it cools a little. This is deffo the weather to do it in!

Reading all that I can see why it took so long when I recently had the arse end out of my 325i, but hopefully it won't be rusting any time soon.

As Andy has said above, make sure this is done otherwise it will just harbour the rust. I was being a bit presumptive assuming any rust work had already been done.

Some great information here gys as always thankful for it.

I must admit after reading up all i doubt i can do this on the drive with such unpredictable weather conditions. It seems straight forward however it would had to the joys of labour if I had a garage. Is there anybody who provides such service here on the zone or do you guys recommend any body shops to go to who know their e30's inside and out ?

Thanks again guys

Avoid any hammershite product or any 'Schutz' type of undercoating.

The king of all primers is epoxy primer, but this is expensive. This would be my recommendation:

1. Using a wire brush on an angle grinder, rub down rusted area to bare metal
2. Key the area with a green/red scuff pad
3. Clean and degrease
4. Spray on some zinc rich primer (not etch), such as electrox
5. Once FULLY dried, seam seal if necessary
6. Spray on some proper underseal such as Dinitrol or Gravitex

In all cases I would strongly recommend the Bilt hamber range!
