Those german tax and tuv stickers do make the plate illegal for UK use. As well as anything other than a GB strip, and not having the postcode and name of the manufacturer.

I'm not! the extra German stickers make them illegal for UK use.

I have a set of German style plates I got from
http://www.theplateman.com/home.htm however as they have now been deemed illegal I went for pressed plates (from the same site) in UK font and spacing in the surrounds. They look a bit different but I cant see a reason to get a tug for them

so surely the fact that you dont have the name and postcode of whoever made up your plates does infact mean that yours are illegal??

Erm my do actually, did I ever say they wern't? and the mere fact I said they were legal would imply they do. Check the website they are laser etched onto the plate. they are 100% road legal.

Kind of but more to do with the manufacture date of the plate, if the plate was manufactured after 2001 it must adhere to the new rules, hence all cars after 2001 also follow. If you own a pre 2001 vehicle and replace the plate strictly speaking in a legal sence you won't be given the same style as your old plates you will be sold plates that also adhere to the new rules.
Your old pre 2001 plates are still legal until they need to be replaced however.

Or of course you could get new plates made up without the name and postcode and put them on your pre 2001 car. How will anyone know if they are new plates or the originals

I've said it before I'll say it again - how would plod be able to prove it provided the plate was also pre 2001 legal spec and the car was pre 2001? They would assume it was either original or replaced prior to 2001 making it legal.
What they gonna do carbon date it to prove your lying? Obviously if its blatently an illegal plate pre/prior 2001 they have you bang to rights. Its like all the classic cars running on age related black plates.
I actually prefer the new styleplates as I have but in pressed steel though. Bonus is they are 100% legal too.

Got mine from
www.eutags.co.uk with the stadt bagdes and plakettes, they look very german but pass the MOT no problem, never been pulled by the cops but sadly they do not confuse speed cameras...

Has anyone thought about just getting a plate from Germany over the net, it would probably be about a tenner, eutags are asking well over £100 for a pair with frames and badges...

Agreed - have several sets for my Golf, Caddy and G60 from German Plates - much better quality than Dubmeister
