Check for cross (shorted together) wire's.
But most likely the stereo is clipping due to having a tiny built in amp.
Buy a better raido or a seprate amp.

Yeah, sounds like the h/u is autocutting out.
Amp the system or get a better h/u bud

thanks lads!
i should have a big chuffin amp and sub box in the loft somewhere i'd better leave it to the pros cause i'll probly end up with a charred mess on the drive where my e30 sits.
it only happened when turned up loud but you could still turn it back down and it comes back on again.
thanks again fellas!

if it as as you say in the last post i would say it is the potentiometer that controls the volume thats partially broken - is the volume knob a turn type or an electronic (i.e a button from up and a button for down)

its a jvc cd head unit with a electronic up & down button.
would i be best to get a new head unit and put the amp and sub box in anyway?

its either a earth prob or power prob.. my suggestion is run a new earth and new power to the battery, basically the original wires are not man enough to do the job for these new modern radios. The radio is not a alpine or kenwood by any chance??? I have experienced this before and doing what i said solved the prob, give it a go.

its either a bad earth OR you have a half dead speaker¬ when a speaker is clipped to hell the ohmage eventually drops where the coils start to die,,, once th eohmage has dropped too low it pulls too much current through the head unit therefore cutting out the head unit and setting it into auto protect!

i thought it was a jvc but its not.
its a pioneer deh-535r 4x40wats powering 2 infinitys on rear and 2 audioscape in the door
i have no idea about the speaker power there is nothing on them to say.
i will try a rewire and keep you all posted !
thanks!
