E30 Zone

Does anyone know if they make the stealth sub box for an E30?

I am toying with the idea of adding a sub but don't really want to take up too much of the boot.

The other option is a Vibe Slick SLR12 as they are quite compact. http://www.vibeaudio.co.uk/index.asp?pa ... ick-h.html

Any opinions would be helpfull.

I am looking for the type that fits into the pocket/well at the side of the boot.

What about putting three 10" free air subs on the underside of the shelf?

It's a big shelf! If not three, two tens then or just turn it down abit, only £40ish each.

Munky I don't see how a flat sub can sound any good. There is a reason why they all aren't flat and wouldn't want to spemd that kind of money for it to sound poo.

Free air subs aren't flat dude, it just means they are designed to run properly without a box of any sort, ie, rear shelf. It will sound very good if they're mounted properly cos they basically use the whole boot as the box, without actually having a box lol, if that makes sense???

i know of a source of some beserk 6.5" (iirc) subs that will shit on most 10's, very compact (but deep). you'd need to make the enclosure though.
if you ever head down to the south coast (hastings area), let me know and i may be able to get my dad (sells them) and my bro (has them in his car for a demo) together if you're interested.

if you're after some subtle grunt, one of them in a teeny box would do it

yes, flat subs arent that good, but if all you want is something to beef up your system, that doesnt take up much space, they're ideal.

That one I linked to is 250w rms iirc. Thats plenty to back up a set of factory position uprated co-ax and give an adequate system.

depending on finace and how d6dph gets on with them that may be just the ticket for my touring as i still need the space for bikes.

Why not knock your own up? Hardly takes up any room and looks better than the metal behind the seat.

That's going to cause issues with the dry solder joints on the amp. The vibrations tend to crack the joits between the rca input and the tracks on the PCB. from my experience anyway.

If I do make my own, I will make some rubber mounts to isolate the amps from any vibration.

Thanks for the tip for now i'll leave it because I don't put too much power through the subs ie not much vibration.

The subs and amp came with the car but they were mounted to a board that was just loose in the boot and the subs were mounted to that (magnet up cone down) which meant that the couldn't hardly move.

If the amp or subs die i'll get some good stuff in there and mount the new amp properely.

on this theme, is there enough room in the touring side covers (around the rear struts) to fit anything?

yes, the factory option ported speaker enclosures for a start!

the flip down side pod jobbies must be big enough for something too. ifind them very useful though.

they're in stock, just none on ebay at present. the best bet will be to hit the 'contact seller' button and ask.

box sizes are from 6 litres upwards full specs are in the listing.

check the exposed coil former length. needed do to the 60mm throw they have! make sure nothing is near the front of them at full chat!!!!

a VERY sturdy infinite baffle box will give you tighter crisper punchier bass than i've heard on any other sub. end of. a ported box will obvously give you more but at the cost of the tight kick they have.

Got the feeling my JL 1000/1 amp might blow it to bits though if i don't set it up carefully!!

if you own one, i'm sure you already know this but a big amp doesn't necessarily just mean it'll be louder and blowing speakers apart. 1kW RMS is pretty hefty and will allow plenty of headroom before clipping. it's when amp start clipping that they damage the speakers. (unless you're driving them waaaaaaay to hard!)

these are a lot more robust than they would seem at first!

I just whacked in a 10" JBL sub

with a small Alpine (100w or something) sub-amp driving it into my cabby which seems to work well, quite effective as 1/2 the sound goes into the car unlike many bass boxes which send 5/6ths out of the boot.

It bolts to a bit of wood routed out to allow the surround space to move, and pumps sound into the back seat via existing cutouts in the metalwork.

Boot space is pretty much as before, the sub driver has a useful rubber boot over the magnet. IMO JBL make some awesome stuff with rubber surrounds, low distortion and high power and sensitivity. I've replaced a lot of rubbish with JBL - they get used in most US night clubs because of the same reasons

JBL supply box calculations which this of course fails, but it's location bumps up the efficiency to match that lost by the lack of a tuned enclosure.
