Sony Head Unit Ipod issues

Got an MEX BT3800U Head unit which up until Yesterday has been fantastic.
Connected my Ipod last night, and although it recognises it, track data can be displayed and the Head unit can control track selection etc there is no sound at all.
I'm stumped. The radio works fine, I have been on the Sony website and been through the "troubleshooting" stuff - useless.
Wondering if I've hit some sort of "mute" button by accident but as the radio works I don't see how.
Tried the ipod in my Ipod dock and its fine so I know the ipod output itself is OK - and as it recognises it and allows the Head unit to change tracks etc I'm guessing the cable is OK
Its connected via the base to USB cable rather than the headphone jack to allow full control by the head unit.
I don't have a 3.5mm - 3.5mm lead to connect via the headphone socket but this isnt really the point - it was working yesterday via the USB sockt and now its not
Anyone else had this ? I don't know what to try next

Getting even stranger now - just tried a USB memory stick in the head unit - detects and plays back fine.
Also connected Ipod to computer via the the same cable I'd been using to connect the the HU - also plays back fine.
Must be something in the head unit ipod settings/software thats stopping it working

Just tried a factory reset - lost all my settings - and Ipod playback still doesnt work
Come to the conclusion that its bust.
Back to CD's

Diconnect the power to the headunit Rob, I had the same problem in the missus car, wouldn't play ipod in her car after a while, disconnect the live, and reconnected it and all is good.

Still no good disconnected it and left it a bit then reconnected - still not working.
It appears that its just not playing at all - and you can't seem to "un pause" it - the counter isnt running whether its playing or paused
Yet play the ipod disconnected from the HU and its fine ?
Its almost like the Ipod software which allows playback though the HU has crashed

Is the ipod cable actually hard wired into the unit??

No - its just a normal Ipod Classic with a plug-in USB cable.
I know the cable is OK because all the track selection functions work on the HU and it plays back fine through the PC connected with the same cable.

Have come to this conclusion
Disconnected it again today, left it for an hour and reconnected it - still the same.
If you start the ipod playing with it disconnected, then connect it via the USB it stops - the track is still detected and all the info is correct but the track timer doesnt move - pressing pause doesnt pause or un-pause it.
As soon as you disconnect it it carrys on playing - and it works fine in the Ipod speaker dock I have.
It would appear to be fooked - gonna buy a headphone jack lead so I can use it in the other Aux in socket but disappointed the USB lpod playback is no more
