You'll be Ok with 16's.

They start eating tyres when you lower the car on stupidly low springs.

16's - good.

17's - bad.

anything bigger - very bad.

What are the advantages of going wider in the rear if any on 16".what would be the max before it starts to rub arches assuming the suspension is normal

Not 205/55 r16! You want something close to the original diameter... If you're sticking to a 7" / 7.5" rim, 205/50 will do nicely.

17's are fine with a decent wheel and correct 215/40 tyre size.. Even ran 235/40 on my old Turd.
