Differnce between tech 1 & 2

Sorry for this newbie question but i have looked i promise, i have seen 'tech 1' and 'tech 2' written quite alot, what does this refer to and whats the difference?

^ to different trims my friend based on a similar engine. Tech 1 is better ofcourse

Cheers guys, i dont know how i missed that! That e30 wiki section is wikid for info, its a great idea. And yea on first impressions tech 1 is my favourite
