It's definately from the right era. But you are right in saying that there was no standard fitment. There would have been an accessory catalogue for e30's where the customer could have chosen a dealer fit item but what was on the list? You'd need to find an '83 accessory brochure.
Drop Andyboy (Andy Everett) a line. he has loads of info on the original press cars and very early e30's. He may know what was common fitment.
I somehow doubt it'd be a Phillips though. More likely to be a Blaupunkt Cambridge or similar or maybe an early Pioneer such as the KEX-73. My moneys on that Philips being fitted by the first owner post purchase to save himself some pennies.

Thanks very much for the reply mate, much appreciated. I think you are correct in saying that its been the first owners fitment because there is the original radio blanking plate in the glovebox....which i can only assume wouldnt be present in the car if the radio had been fitted at the dealer. I MUCH prefer period Blaupunkts and indeed in the original E30 launch brochure that i have there is a Blauupunkt New York which i adore the look of.....not overly fussed for the Philips but if itb had of been the original id of kept it.

Becker was not oem.... Your looking at Pioneer and Blaupunkt. Will dig up some threads for you.

If you want to be a real OEM freak then put the blanking plate back on and keep it how that individual car came fresh off the line.
Looks pretty nice with the blanking plate in my opinion

Mines still in the glove box as well

but think I'd rather have sounds TBO
If I had a very early car I'd be looking for an original Pioneer component system like the KEX range. I fitted one of these in an '85 M535 e28 a few years ago and it looked the t1ts. It sounded ok as well. These were massive money wise and the tops back in the day when Pioneer made quality gear.
or an early New York like this one:
Theres a mint early M635csi on the show scene owned by a guy named Ken. It has the full component Pioneer set up fitted and looks fantastic although I'd have mounted the CD player in some kinda housing to neaten it up but this kit was current when the car was new.

Also take a read of the diddlers resto. Should be a source of inspiration to an oem like yourself....

have you tried tringing bmw to get the original spec list for your car or trying to find out what the customer originaly chose ?
my car came with a pioneer blueetooth, but ive recently bought a cassete holder console bit, and going to retro fit a cassete stero somewhen
have the original bill of sale for my car in the owners folder thing and theres also an old philips stereo manual in there, which i presume is the original, should dig it out really and see what the stereos like and hunt one down, although i like the blaupunkts with aux in so i can use an ipod
casette player with some original late 80s/early 90s casettes in the holder, would look magic i reckon, and just use the ipod with 1 lead, that easily taken away

I too am an OEM deviant and if theres one thing I hate it's a modern hifi in a retro car. However, I also wanted to run my ipod
So I tracked down a 1995 Pioneer P series cassette head unit (which still looks pretty period in the dash) and hooked up Pioneers CD-IB100 ipod adaptor which runs a fly lead to the glovebox which links the ipod to the headunit. All track search etc is now run from the head unit. I seems the ideal happy medium to me. I am also running an 1989 Alpine spectrum analyser which allows me to run 2 amps to custom fit speakers. All very stealth, period and suits what I need.

Yep. I'm in the same boat with my E28. It's got a Blaupunkt Memphis which seems to have a separate power amp tucked in behind it. I like the look of the Becker head units, but if possible I'd keep the Blaupunkt just for it's looks. Wondering if it's possible to wire headphone jack into the amp unit somehow and leave the head unit out of it? No idea what the relative power of amp and head unit are..

The memphis has a 3.5mm jack input to the front right? Barry has one in his sport and runs his ipod through that medium.

Hmmm, nope, not on mine. It's a Memphis SQR 06 in a Nov 86 build E28. There's a selector for LIN though - top row of buttons has U, M, L for radio wavebands then LIN then DX or something like that. Might be a line in mode? I'll pull it out and see if there's a jack point on the back if you think there's any point?

Might be worth a look. I know Barrys Memphis has the line jack on the front. he's posted it on my OEM hifi thread which is stickied in the ICE section?

I have only just realised there has been a huge response to my thread here, thank you all so much folks. That Pioneer KEX setup B7 is utterly lusher than Lush mate. I think im going for Blaupunkt or Pioneer and ebaying the Philips setup tbh. That New York above is identical to the one in the launch brochure that i have. HMMM food for thought....its just finding a pioneer KEX or Blaupunkt New York at a reasonable price.....
i see old colonel are selling a NY but it doesent look the best with its flap missing....

The Memphis with the Aux in on the front is a SQR 88 not 06.

CHRIST! That takes me back! Thats a Pioneer KE-6300(?) dating from approx. 1984. I had one in my Mk1 Granada that I bought in 1984 and sold in 1986. I had it hooked up to a BP-520 Graphic through to a pair of TS168's in the rear and TS108's in the front.
The KE-8300(?) was the better one as it had seperate bass and treble but was in a silver finish. Mate had that model in his Mk1 facelift 3.0GT Capri. Their first line of DIN sized ICE.
Nice buy

Cheers mate VERY happy with my buy, the same seller has tghe silveryed finish higher spec one but wants £100 and its got a green display which i didnt think would tie in with the E30s oange dash lights, got this for £50 which i thought was a bargain. Hunt is on for a manual now!!!

Look out for a BP 520 or 720 equaliser. That will then give you 4 chanel output with fader and infinite tone control to compensate for the lack to bas and treble on the head unit.
