i have the Apline 9887 which is very good, but expensive.
the ipod lead i ran through and into the glovebox, this way the ipod sits in there and no need to touch it (it also charges for you which is nice)
so my advice is to ensure the head unit you get had full ipod control from the head unit rather then having to change tunes on the ipod.

i have in my cab a JVC head unit and very impressed with it, it even has a front screen tilt function so you can angle the screen to suit, great in a cab when the sun is out. not the unit i have but has all your functions..they also have millions of colour options so you can suit it to the orange E30 interior lights

for the price i think they are great stereos, problem i find with the Sony is the colour its either blue or red, and some Sonys have silly flashing screens which make them appear cheap IMO. I would definately have a look at a demo before i buy.
JVC very good, but not a trendy brand, but as i said the features are superb.

ive got an old ish jvc stereo in my house but the cd player doesnt work, great functions, was quite expensive new. I think the lower end market of jvc aren't amazing just pretty standard (no offence meant)
