can anyone give me a tip or two on how to mask up the outside rim of my wheels so that i leave the rim silver?

I'm guessing you're painting the centers of your basketweaves charcoal grey or black? If you want the rims to stay silver then you can use painters tape to mask it off. You might want to mask off the back (inside the wheel) as well so the over spray or drips don't get everywhere.
